Hi, I looked this up but couldn't find anything like that on the forum. I'm kinda freaking out, let me get right into it.

We got one of my boys (a few months shy from being 1 and a half years old) neutered today. Everything's good and we trust our vet. We hand-fed him for a while. It's been about 7 hours so he's doing better now. But I just saw a red spot on his towel. Not sure if it's just blood or urine that is mixed woth blood. He hasn't pooped or anything either. I'm so clueless all I know is "blood -in any case- is bad". What do I do?

Hi, I’m a student vet nurse and I know in our practice we request a post op checkup two days after the surgery- in this case I would call up and request one tomorrow to be sure. There can be a small amount of blood after, but generally this should not be the case and I would definitely have him looked at to be sure.

A surgery for any species is a stressful time and can decrease an animals appetite for about 24 hours. In guinea pigs, obviously we do not want this so I would step in with syringe feeding (mash up some of his pellets with some water) to ensure his gut is still moving etc. This will also ensure he is still getting fluids in.

Is the wound itself still sealed and looking ok? No bruising, swelling or discharge?

If the wound is actively bleeding or you he seems to be struggling to urinate/is not at all, I would call the vet as soon as. They’d rather you call the emergency line and check then leave it :)

Hi

Bloody urine in the first hours after an operation can happen occasionally; it is a reaction to the operation drug cocktail and should settle down within 24 hours. If it doesn't or if your piggy is not eating and isn't bright at all/increasingly lethargic, then please contact your vet tomorrow.
