I took my 5 month old boy, Atreus, to the vets this morning. He's currently one week post-op from being neutered. His incision appears to be healing well there's just a bit of swelling present, so we've been prescribed some more anti-inflamatory medication. However, the actual reason I took him to the vets is because his penis looks very swollen and just doesn't look right. The vet said it looks like it's bruised from potentially being over-groomed but she didn't seem too concerned. The vet nurse then added that they don't see many guinea pigs and she wasn't really sure if what she was looking at is okay. Please can someone advise me on what to do? Thanks x

My Cyril had a lot of semen stuck around his bits post op which can make everything sore. I used some warm, damp cotton pads to help loosen it and any other bits of debris. You could try that and see if that helps. It does look a bit gunky. Is he peeing ok?

Yeah he appears to be passing urine without a problem. He's not vocalising loudly and it's a normal colour.

Just try soaking the area with a warm pad. See if you can remove any of the gunk from around it and see if that helps.

If it does help, will it return back to normal? Like will it go back in, if you know what I mean?

Yes it should do if that is what it was like beforehand. See if you are able to express it so to speak. There might be a bit of hay lodged further up the shaft. One of my boys often stores hay next to his friend.

If there's nothing there and everything looks normal and healthy, it may be 'cauliflower willy' which you can read more about in this guide. (Part III, but I recommend reading it all as there's lots of useful information).

Sometimes a change can happen all of a sudden and for no apparent reason. As @Piggies&buns says, if everything is healthy and not red, swollen or irritated, you needn't worry 😊

Would you say it looks okay in the photo? I'm such an overthinker and to me it does look red & swollen but like I said the vet and vet nurse didn't seem massively concerned. I'm sorry if I'm being annoying, I'm just worried x

It doesn’t look red in the picture to me -
We aren’t vets though and looking at a picture isn’t the same thing as a hands on check even if we could tell you what was wrong (which we can’t).

Don’t apologise for asking questions, we all tend to worry when we care so much.
The picture is a bit blurry and realistically we aren’t to know if it is normal or not by a picture unfortunately.

I would personally do as said above, give it a wipe down and try and express the penis to see if there is anything stuck or buildup and if not, there may be a chance that’s just how he is.

Boars bits come in all different shapes and sizes, you may find searching up like terms on the forum a good way to see examples of how different boys bits can be.
May sound a little silly but can be very informative.

Okay, thank you x

Thank you, I will have a good read of that thread I was tagged in and go from there x

You are not being annoying nor should you apologise for asking questions. If you don't ask, you won't know.

To me it doesn't look red or obviously swollen. Personally I'd do a little soak to see if there's anything stuck there that's making it look that way. If there's nothing there, and he's not in any discomfort, then I wouldn't worry about it. How many days post op is he?

Thank you, I need to hear that:)

He's 7 days post-op today.

Did he have an abdominal castration?

As long as he's eating and being his usual self, I'm sure he'll be fine. Are you weighing him daily to ensure he's eating enough?

It's good that they've given recovery food too. I asked for several sachets when my boys had theirs. They were on pain meds/antiinflammatories for about 10-14 days as they were big babies and would go on hunger strike looking very sorry for themselves.

Yes they had an abdominal castration. The vet nurse said the incisions looks good, there's just a little bit of swelling.

I am weighing them daily also.

I still feel so new to owning piggies and I worry I just don't know enough.
