Hi all,

Blue has been to the vet. 🏥🤍

It's quite a strange one... his voice sounds raspy (like humans when we have a cold), but it seems to come and go - some days he sounds completely fine and others he sounds blocked. He was at the vet over a month ago but they weren't worried. I took him back two days ago as I was adamant about having him x-rayed to see because it must be coming from somewhere.

He is in extremely high spirits, I wouldn't know he was sick if I wasn't very observant of the subtle noises!

The x-ray showed a "small amount" of fluid in his lungs - the vet said he could have an infection that's been dormant but comes and goes? Has anyone experienced this before? She did an ultrasound of his heart and it looked ok. His teeth were perfect too. So she said he has mild pneumonia.

He also had some discharge coming from his eyes. (Not enough to cause them to get crusty though).

The vet prescribed Blue Arthrocam (Metacam), Doxycare, and Chloramphenicol Eye Drops. I've never had a piggie on Doxy before, I've read that it causes a bad appetite... he seems fine - is eating loads and not losing weight two days in - but I'm being proactive! Do you guys recommend probiotics every time a guinea pig is put on antibiotics? Or is this only a resort for if they lose their appetite?

None of my other piggies are sick btw...

What could it be? 😩

If it was a bacterial infection surely my other piggies would be sick, but if it isn't a bacterial infection then the Doxy won't work. He was on Arthrocam over a month ago but it didn't do anything!

Bacterial infections don't always transfer from pig to pig, when we had a small herd we would often have one with a URI or UTI that didn't spread.

If they arent improving then get back to your vet, sending lots of healing vibes

I agree - a bacterial infection does not necessarily infect other pigs; their immune system can fight it off.

Yes, give a probiotic 1-2 hours before or after an antibiotic dose (never at the same time as as it can stop it working). You don’t have to nor should you wait until appetite is lost - proactive is good!

Hi

I would strongly recommend to give probiotics and - if you can also 'poo soup' - with doxy but you will either have to do so 1 hour before or at least 2 hours after the antibiotic in order to avoid the extra digestive gut microbiome being affected by the antibiotic. Either way or time outside that 3 hours band around the antibiotic works.

All the best with getting on top of the silent pneumonia. Good that your vet has found what is the problem before it could blow up all of a sudden.

In the case the doxycycline is knocking the appetite:

I'm sorry Blue is sick and I'm sorry you're struggling with clumping antibiotics - I have no idea there.

But I did want to say that your pic of him taking his meds is really sweet.
Get well soon Blue!

I would not think so. Best to speak to the vet about this. I have never had a liquid AB clump
Hi

This is not normal. We've never come across it. I would recommend to contact the dispensing clinic as it could be due to incorrect or too long storage?
Hi both - thank you for the quick replies. I've never come across it either... SMH! Luckily they are giving me a new one so I'm heading over now as they've just opened.

Hopefully all will be good for Blue soon and thank you for all of your help! :) x
