Hey all! I went to my piggies room this morning to feed them breakfast and check up on them and I noticed a small spot of what looks to be blood on their fleece liners (can be seen below). I took them both out of their enclosure and checked them for blood on their bums (potential stones), wounds, anything. I found nothing, I called their vet and they suggested separating them so I can determine who it’s coming from. Is this a bad idea, they are both male and I’m worried it will disrupt their bond. Obviously their health comes first, but I need advice. They’re both acting normal, and I’d like to add they haven’t had carrot in a few days, so I don’t think that’s what this is. They also haven’t lost any weight as I weigh them weekly.
thanks for reading,
charlotte

Hi!

Please keep an eye on it. It looks like the start of a potential urinary tract infection (UTI) or a cystitis (bladder infection; can be bacterial or non-bacterial=sterile); it could also be from some bladder sludge or a stone.

In the case of an infection or cystitis, it usually takes 5-7 days for symptoms to firm up during which clear and porphyrine-coloured pees can follow each other and clear pees can test high in blood while red coloured pees can test free of it. Please see a vet during regular opening hours at the start of next week. By then, you should know which piggy is affected and symptoms will be fully going. That is also realistically a time frame you should be able to book an appointment in the US.

Your vet will hopefully also check for the potential of sludge or stones.

Okay, I’ll book a vets appointment ASAP! Should I separate them to better see who it is?

Rather than separate them, you could place each piggy in a clean bowl until they pee. If the urine is clear, suck it up in to a syringe, place in the fridge and take to the vets tomorrow. They can then test it for blood and you will know which one is poorly. Just make sure not to get the urine samples mixed up! Good luck x

Update: I was able to get one urine sample from one of my piggies I brought it to the vets and they tested it, the vet was out today and they’re closed on the weekend so I’m going over his chart on Monday to see which piggy is sick and I’ll be bringing which ever one on Tuesday!

Hey everyone! I just got back from the vets. She said everything looks phenomenal and they both looked healthy, my guinea pig who did not get his urine tested got an X-ray, and the vet didn’t see any signs of stones or anything out of the ordinary. I want to be grateful for this news, but I’m still left wondering what caused the bleeding in the first place. I checked them over right after I found the blood and they didn’t have any scratches or cuts or anything, I’m completely stumped.

That’s great that they both seem healthy. Did the vet test the urine for the presence of blood? I’m wondering if one has a uti. You should know over the coming days
