Woody has unfortunately started peeing blood every so often and after a trip to the vets they suspect he has a UTI.

He has been given Co Trimoxazole twice daily for 7 days, how long should I wait to expect results?

He has a history of sludge and stones (and is on medication for this) so I am conscious of taking him back for scans if the antibiotics don't resolve the issue!

Hi

Very sorry. I assume that the vets have checked for new sludge or stones?

Just a week of septrin/sulfatrim/bactrim (the better known brand names for the antibiotic you have been prescribed) may be too short to get on top of it although in your case the infection could be a bacterial cystitis from damage to the bladder as much as the standard urine infection caused by an overgrowth of faecal bacteria in the urinary tract (that is what a UTI actually is).

All the best. Please contact the clinic if there is no improvement after the weekend.

Thank you, I did think it was strange to only be prescribed one week as in the past I have been prescribed 2!

They didn't check for stones this time as woody showed no signs of discomfort when peeing (even after pain meds should have worn off) and is already on a dieuretic which should reduce the amount of sludge.

He is also on cystease so theoretically he should also have a good bladder lining however woody has lots of issues with his bladder so don't know how true that is 😬

It will most likely be faecal matter as woody likes to hang low and rub his manhood to the floor often 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

Obviously if it persists I will get checked for stones as he has had them in the past but as he had minimal discomfort and was still urinating and pooing as usual the vet wanted to try antibiotics first!

Perhaps your vets want just to see whether there is a reaction to antibiotics or not? Treating for infection is usually the first step in eliminating urinary tract problems when symptoms are a bit vague.

Yes I think that may be the case thinking about it😂🤦🏻‍♀️I hadn't seen the vet before but she spent 5 minutes reading his notes (there's lots of them 😂😬) before I was called in and was very knowledgeable so I will do the full dose and see where we stand! Thank you for your advice 😊
