Hello,

My guinea pig cookie recently got put on meloxicam and trimethoprim-sulfa for hematuria(bloody urine) and a swollen penis its been about 6 days now and today he started peeing blood again. I'm concerned and don’t know what to do..I did contact the vet again they will call me later today but I need advice cause he is crying when peeing.

How did they investigate the swollen penis? Did they carry out any x rays etc?

Obviously I don’t want to alarm you, but a swollen penis, bleeding and pain is making me wonder whether it May be a stone. I can only suggest you call an out of hours vet.

They did there was no bladder stones his swollen genitals have gone down and his peed clear up on the second day of having the antibiotics but now the blood came back. They also did a bladder ultra sound and found a soft tissue mass but they were not sure if it was a tumor or a blood cloth.

Has it been confirmed to be blood you're seeing? Porphyrin can also change the colour of the urine. Sometimes bright red or orange urine can have no blood in it but seemingly clear urine can test positive.

Sorry, you mentioned ultrasound, did they do x-ray also? Reason why I ask is because not all stones show up on scans.

Sometimes a longer course of antibiotics are needed to clear it all if there's infection present. I'm more concerned about his penis swelling. There's nothing stuck in his urethrae like a piece of hay or sperm rod or any smegma that's dried around the base of his penis?

What dose and strength meloxicam is he on?

Please note that a piggie in pain is less likely to eat and will lose weight so please weigh him daily (preferably at the same time each day and before any veggies or pellets). If he is losing weight you'll need to step in and syringe feed him. It also may be worth giving him a probiotic 1-2hrs after he has his antibiotic. Antibiotics suppress appetite and kill the good bacteria in their gut, a probiotic will help combat that. Please see our guides below:

He hasn’t lost weight and he is eating, drinking and doing normal activities. There is blood in his pee is bright red. They did do X-rays and a ultrasound which showed no signed of stones present. The pain killer dose is 0.1ml and antibiotics are twice a day 0.25 I'm not sure how strong the doses are.

Are they sure that the penis is no longer swollen? My boar had a swollen penis 3 weeks ago, I only saw because I happened to pick him up to do his health checks at the right time, when it was extended and visible. A few minutes later I looked again, and it was no longer extended, I wouldn't have known it was swollen if I hadn't seen it earlier. (I got him to the vet that evening, he removed a ring of smegma/boar glue which was constricting it)
