I'm not certain if it's from Jynx or Leo. Both are their normal selves, there's no sign of blood around either of their genitals, and I've not heard any squeaking while peeing either. It *looks* like blood and has what looks to be very tiny clots in it, but could it be discolouration? The stuff on the white towel is within the last 10 mins.

I'm still a bit of a newbie, but we've found what appeared to be blood in our piggy's cage before too. We held each piggy to figure out which one it was and booked a vet appointment. I hope it's nothing serious and that you can figure out which piggy it is soon.

Update

Leo wasn't looking like his usual chirpy self a couple of weeks ago, so I took him to the vet for a check-up. They didn't find anything except that perhaps his tummy was a bit overactive, so was prescribed 0.1ml of Cisapride and 0.5ml of Metacam for 7 days. If anything changed, the next step would be for blood tests, x-ray and an ultrasound.

On Monday, I noticed the blood as per my first post. Then Leo spent most of yesterday sat in one spot hunched up and looking sorry for himself, so I booked him in for another appointment this morning. Fortunately the vet was able to do all the tests and get the results back same day, which is pretty good!

The vet noticed in the x-ray what look to be calcium "stones" about 4mm in diameter around or in his bladder, so they ran the ultrasound over his abdomen too to get another look. They're not sure if the "stones" (the vet used a different word, but I don't remember it) are actually in his bladder or in a male part of his abdomen which sits either side of the bladder, so he's now on 0.4ml of Cerenia and 0.4ml of Metacam to see if this helps to clear them. At this point, particularly as they don't know for certain where the stones are, surgery is not the right option.

In addition to this, the x-rays show he's starting to get arthritis in his knees (although there's no need to start treating it yet), and his blood tests show his kidneys aren't functioning as well as they could either, so he's also on 0.35ml of Fortekor long-term with Jasmine too! He's been holding a steady weight of ~920g for a couple of weeks, but today has dropped to 826g and he's now lighter than Jasmine (who's slowly putting all hers back on at 846g today)! He's normally over 1kg and has managed to lose 100g since Monday. :(

I also now know for certain that the "blood" is coming from Leo as I took him out of the carrier when we arrived home and he's done a fresh pee with blood in it. :(

Thankfully I've been paid for a load of overtime this month as it's been another hefty nearly £400 bill again after Jasmine's last month!

Leo now has to go on a low calcium diet too, although all three pigs are on it anyway. I've been giving them lots of bell peppers and cucumber, and limiting their salad leaf/lettuce intake, but the vet said it should actually be the other way round. Can anyone advise?

Leo's weight steadied out at ~775g for the last two weeks, but he's starting to drop again right before his follow-up appointment on Friday. Something is clearly bothering him. I'm stepping in with syringe feeding, and have been bribing him to take his meds with blueberries, but he's only picking at them now. At the very least, I'm glad he's still eating by himself, but his poops are looking a bit stringy.

Fingers crossed it's better news on Friday!

Aw poor Leo, I do hope he can pass the stones, such a worry when they start loosing weight, sending hugs
Hope his appointment goes well on Friday

I’m so sorry to hear Leo is having a tough time!
The boys and I are sending lots of love and hope he starts to improve soon.
Hope all goes well on Friday 💕

Leo is clearly in pain/not well today. We could really have done with that appointment yesterday... He's sitting hunched and disinterested in the hay, and has barely moved or eaten. I've been keeping up the metacam and increased it to 0.5ml. I'm really hoping he can hang on until he sees the vet first thing tomorrow. :(

He doesn't seem to be pooping properly. I've seen some stringy poops from him over the last few days, and now I've just picked him up to syringe feed him, he smeared a load of caecotrophs across my hand. Is this likely to be his gut slowing down or a sign that something might be wrong with his gut?

I saw him straining a little and making an uncomfortable noise when pooping (pretty sure it was pooping and not peeing because he ate a caecotroph afterwards). I also thought he might be impacted the other day because he hadn't pooped everything out properly, but his sack doesn't seem congested. Any thoughts or has someone experienced similar?

To confirm, I'm not looking for a diagnosis; I'm just reaching out for reassurance!

I agree if they haven’t eaten much then they get stringy poops. That was the first thing I noticed about Ted when his teeth were causing him pain and he stopped eating hay. I think it just upsets their tummy and their natural passage of poop.
Hope it goes well tomorrow x

He doesn't appear to have diarrhoea, but he seems to be producing clumps of poops and caecotrophs together, and I have no idea what the white thing is! It looks like boar glue, but he's neutered. What could it be? Same stuff making poops stringy? He seems to be amassing it, not as impaction, but simply from not moving much all day. As I said earlier, he seems to strain when pooping.

Thankfully he is still picking at buts by himself, but he's clearly not well. Just hoping he's okay tomorrow morning when we see the vet. :(

Hope things are ok with Leo @HeatherW . My boar Diego has recently had a bladder stone surgery so I understand the stress and upset stones cause! Hope you’ve got on ok at the vets, keep us updated. Thinking of you and Leo x

I've just got off the phone with the vet and sadly it's not good news. The ultrasound has shown that Leo's kidneys are completely abnormal and cystic, so we're looking at a few weeks of palliative care which will depend on how he feels. Based on his recent behaviour, I sense the end is probably not too far off.

The kidneys were missed at his last appointment because they only did an ultrasound over his bladder. However, I was told that kidney failure would only show in blood tests if they were operating at ~25% or less, so the news hasn't really come as too much of a shock.

He's going to be on Forketor, Cerenia and Metacam until it's time for him to be PTS. :(

I'm so sorry to read your news, I have no advise or better words other than to send you hugs and hope for as much time as possible. ☹️

Oh no. I am so, so sorry to read this Heather. Poor little fellow. I hope that he can be kept comfy and enjoy his last days with Jynx and his neighbour Jasmine to comfort him. Huge hugs xx

Just caught up with this thread Heather I'm so sorry, we also had bad news from the vet yesterday... hoping Leo can enjoy the time he has left, surprise bad diagnoses really suck dont they :(
Sending hugs x

I'm so sorry about this news @HeatherW 💔

Spend more quality time with Leo. We can only do so much for them. But I'm sure when his time comes, he knows he's been loved so much. ❤ Big hugs to you both.

I’m sorry you had bad news. I’m sure you will enjoy many happy todays with Leo 💕

Out of interest, does anyone know how to help a guinea with nausea? Apparently it's a symptom of kidney failure and Leo may be feeling it as he's rather quiet, so I'd like to help ease it for him if there's anything I can do!

Here he is having a good nibble at some grass with the wife this morning. :)

Poor Leo.
I didn’t know guinea pigs could feel nausea as they can’t vomit.
Sorry I can’t help, except to assure you of my support.
Hugs
