Senior Guinea Pig
What a fraught week, Blodwen pig (now rather an old lady, age 6) still likes to keep us on our toes!
Out of nowhere, poor Blod got a nasty infection in her front paw- it is an arthritic old paw, which she walks on slightly funny, and she had a foot spur, which she caught and tore, and in under a week it went from a tiny scab to a nasty abscess... we saw the vet last weekend, the paw looked awful, the vet was talking about possible osteomyelitis, how it was unlikely to heal at her age, we were going to have an x-ray under anaesthesia this week and explore how deep the infection was and not wake her up if it looked bad...
Cue the magnificent Queen Blod to make a miraculous recovery, yet again! 5 days of baytril and paw washes and the vet says she's amazed how well it has healed, it doesn't look bad enough to be worth the risk of anaesthetic to x-ray at this point, it doesn't look bad at all in fact, most of the infection gone and just a little scab! We aren't out of the woods yet of course, but we've had a last minute reprieve, gone from talking about pts on Thursday, to now talking about possible recovery without surgery, just medication. We were so sure it was pts time, I have the shoebox ready and bought the flowers to plant- but not today, and not this wheek, says Blodwen!
Blodwen has celebrated this news by biting open the 3cm sebaceous cyst on her back, because she wants to make sure she gets her money's worth out all these vet appointments, and biting open her cyst is a very clever thing to do while she is on a high dose of antibiotics anyway. She is such a special piggy
Blodwen would urge everyone to check their piggies' feet regularly, keep elderly paws clean, and get straight to the vet if there is any broken skin at all- paws are very important, and can go from a tiny scab to a big abscess in a few days, and this could turn into a lethal a deep bone infection with very little warning... we've been very lucky!
