New Born Pup
Hello all Guinea Pig moms and Guinea Dads out there! I am new to this forum but I’ve been looking for one for awhile now, and this one seems perfect for me and my piggies
I have been a piggie mom since I was in preschool. I had Starlight since the day she was born and she stayed with me for almost 10 wonderful years. I then took a break from animals bc losing Starlight (as well as her mom “Susie” and her albino sister “Snowball”) it was very difficult for me. I recently adopted 2 Guinea pigs who were passed around to 4 different homes and neglected. I then adopted a third from petsmart bc she was so small and depressed and all alone. So I’ve had Pumpkin and Spooky and a week later, Peanut (who now has passed Dec 21, 2023 due to complications two days before my birthday and 4 days before Christmas ) for a year now.
Since adopting these, Peanut and Spooky had 3 babies, Shadow, Phantom, and Dhalia, and since then Dhalia and Shadow has had two twin piggies Scooter, and Nova.
For the first time ever, I’m experiencing bloat with Pumpkin. This all began by giving Pumpkin Baytril from a Vet Instructions. Thinking it was a respiratory issue. I noticed after a week or two her poops began getting very small to almost nothing and looking like a tiny tiny tear drop. I knew this wasn’t normal. I took her to the ER vet and they told me she has GI Stasis and bloat. They gave me Metoclopramide to give her twice a day. She is eating and drinking normal now but her poops are still tiny and she is having constipation problems still. She has been on this medication for about a week and a half to two weeks now. I have a few more doses to give her.
They didn’t tell me what to feed her at this time and I’ve asked. They told me lots of water hay and fiber and pellets. But I’ve been reading so many other answers. Yes to veggies, no to veggies. Yes to pellets, no to pellets. Timothy hay and no Timothy hay. What do I do?! She has gone down some but her left side is still hard and tender to touch. She is eating and drinking fine. She doesn’t cry. But she hardly ever talks since the day we got her. She barely ever talks. She lives with a male and she has never let him near her. Ever (to impregnate her). They are best friends and love each other so much. But pumpkin doesn’t let any male near her. Which I thought was strange. We don’t need any more piggies, and pumpkin is too old to give birth for the first time, so that’s a very good thing she doesn’t let them near her (even though she’s only around any other males other than spooky on constant supervision) but still doesn’t seem normal. I’m not sure what to do at this point. How long will it take for her to get better? I was reading one post/chat/blog (not sure what it’s called; again- I am new to this!) when will she recover? What can I do to help her? My Guinea piggy is strange, but I love her dearly. She is my baby.
