Hi,

I am new to the forum and just wondered if anyone could offer any advice on a problem I have . One of my female guinea pigs started bleeding in early April we went to the vets and she had an X-ray which didn’t show anything. She was then given a 10 day course of Marbocyl and the bleeding stopped after 3 days.
She then started bleeding again 17 days after the last tablet so was given another course of marbocyl and some metacam. This time the bleeding didn’t stop until day 10 of the tablets.
12 days later and she is bleeding again.
The blood tends to be either bright red or really dark red it’s not watered down so I don’t think it’s mixed with her urine.
Other than the blood there is nothing wrong she is eating and running around as usual.
Any advice on what might be causing the bleeding would be much appreciated

Thanks

Thank you for your help 😊

I will phone the vets again tomorrow and try and get an appointment

Please try and get an emergency appointment. Bleeding from genital area is not good. The vet needs to do more investigations. I’ll tag @Wiebke @VickiA

Hi! I am very sorry. Bleeding from the genitalia is usually the sign of a serious problem in the reproductive tract of sows or from a stone stuck in the urethra. Please make sure that you get a vet appointment at the soonest tomorrow.

PS: Blood red urine is generally the sign of a urinary tract infection (UTI) or a bladder infection (cystitis). In this case the intensely red colour is porphyrine and not actually sheer blood. You will still need to see a vet ideally before the weekend but not as urgently as any acute bleeding.

All the best!

Thank you for your advice 🙂. We went to the vets today and she is booked in for an ultrasound on Saturday

Think that’s the best thing to do, as it does sound like a scan is needed to find out what is going on. Please let us know how you get on.

I will let you know. I just hope it’s something that can be treated 😔

Please don’t fear the worst. I have had sows spayed for bleeding from the reproductive tract. And they have been fine after a period of recovery.
