Hello,

Just spotted some blood in the enclosure and found it's coming from lily's vagina.

Obviously Friday night was the worst time to spot this with vets being closed on a weekend...

I'm essentially looking for advise on how to ensure she stays comfortable or and pre treatment/ what to keep an eye on before we get her in to see the vets.

Hopefully we can find somewhere tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your time

I'm sorry I have no experience with sows, just offering support until someone more knowledgeable appears.

Would it be possible to telephone your usual vet tomorrow morning, and see if you can fit her in as an emergency? Most vets can offer you an emergency service number to get her seen at weekends and out of hours.

Hopefully it's something simple such as a UTI (urinary tract infection) or there's a possibility it could be something to do with her reproductive organs, such as ovarian cysts or womb problems.
It's best to get a vet to diagnose her correctly and start any treatment as soon as possible to give her a head start on recovery.

Fingers and paws all crossed here for a full and speedy recovery 🤞🏻 🐾 xx

Hi

I am very sorry. How worrying for you.

Just keep her normal.

What I would recommend that you switch from weighing once weekly to weighing daily first thing in the morning to monitor the daily food intake as a precautionary measure so you can step in if needed as soon as possible.

This guide link here gives you a bit of a practical insight into weight monitoring and when you need to support; including when weight loss becomes actually significant individually.

This link here contains our information on health issues related to the female reproductive tract; you may find it helpful.
Red coloured urine is generally a urinary tract problem. Sheer bleeding from the sow bits points towards a problem with ovarian cysts or the womb. It needs to be taken seriously but it is not an emergency as long as she is eating normally and can wait until you get an appointment next week.

I hope that this helps you? All the best.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for your replys.

We tried to get her an appointment today but no-one would take her on as she wasn't registered anywhere other than our local vets, whom don't do out of hours appointments. Lesson for next week to get them all registered somewhere else.

I've been doing hourly checks on her, she's around 950g ATM, for her that's not far off normal. Always been the runt of the litter, but a big attitude!

She's acting her normal self, eating hay and veggies as per a normal day. We're going to get her an appointment first thing Monday, just for her comfort as much as our own.

It's a difficult one as she has a lot of symptoms for ovarian cysts (crusty nipples, unusual aggressive behaviour) she's been like that for the last year and we've had her checked out previously and they found nothing.

Her wee is always red or redish (advantage of white paper bedding) and I found a few clots last night. I'm thinking it's probably cystitis or other UTI but of course I'm not a vet.

Hopefully just some antibiotics on Monday but we'll see what the vet says.

Thanks again for your replys.

All the best.

So we got lily in to the vets on Tues.

She's been given a course of antibiotics for 2 weeks to see if it's a UTI or anything bacteria related. He didn't seem to be worried about her crusty nipples or behaviour so we're leaving them.

We're quite confident that the bleeding is from the urine and not anywhere else.

She's on day 4 now of treatment but the blood patches don't seem any better yet. I've confirmed it's just her by segregation of her sisters untill they peed and they all check out fine.

She's still exactly like her normal self, eating, drinking, dancing for food, being mean to Olive.. the norm.

Hopefully it starts to show signs of clearing up soon, don't want her getting ill over Christmas and not having any vets to see her!

Hi

Thanks for the update.

Good that you are dealing with red urine and not sheer blood. That is always a major relief. :)

There are two major urinary tract infections. One is a bacterial urine infection caused by an overgrowth of faecal bacteria in the urinary tract (from scent marking) and the other - these days more common one in indoors piggies - is a sterile (i.e. non-bacterial) cystitis that seems to mainly affect the natural insulating glucosamine coating of the walls of the urinary tract.

You can find more helpful information in this link here, which gives a bit of an overview:
