Sierra has ovarian cysts. She also has interstitial cystitis (IC). Now we are currently giving her Loxicom and Cystophan for the IC and there would be ocassional pinkish pee while we are treating it. But tonight, before I give her a CC top up at 12mn (I give her a top up because since the IC diagnosis, her weight has gone down a bit but she is maintaining that new weight), I noticed there were dark red circles and smears on different areas of the fleece bedding. I picked her up and saw that her genitals have blood. Not just the pinkish tint from wee but proper blood. Hubby said it might be just a wound because she is straining to pee and poo because of IC. But I think this is related now to her ovarian cysts. I'm going to force hubby for us to take her to the vet on Monday, but what I'm worried is will she lasts until Monday? I'm so afraid of losing another guinea pig after we just put Rocky to sleep on Thursday. 😭 It's annoying too that it happened on a Sunday (well it's technically Sunday now in UK).

Hi!

Yes, this looks rather like blood and not like bloody wees - and it needs to be seen by a vet, as any bleeding from the genitals. The culprit is very often an ovarian cyst in sows.

Please take a deep breath; it is not a life or death emergency but try to get an appointment at the Cat&Rabbit by contacting them tomorrow morning before the Maddocks are off for their summer break in case a spay is needed.

I am very sorry for the timing. All the best!

Crossing my fingers tightly that Sierra will be ok until she can be seen at the vets. In my experience crazy stuff like this always happens on a Sunday or out of hours. One of the cats once ate a tray of poisonous plants on a Sunday morning because he was accidentally given access to where they were and I didn’t realize until I though “where is X, that cat is awfully quiet”.
Long story short he was fine but I was on the phone with the emergency vet instantly who after looking up the plant species said to just keep an eye on him and rush him in if anything changed. Cat never showed one single symptom and didn’t even puke or have bathroom issues, must have an asbestos gut which is more than I can say for my heart at the time😂.

I’m sure Sierra will be just fine, but these little animals are so skilled at scaring us half to death.

These things always happen on weekends, just after the vets are closed. And sometimes everything bad happens all at once. ☹️
But I agree with the posts above that it's not a life threatening issue that can't wait till monday.
Fingers crossed that you will get an appointment on monday and all the best!

Thank you all for telling me it's not life threatening! Hubby doesn't believe me when I say it's the ovarian cysts causing this, but I will drag him to the vet tomorrow, either going to Matlock to see Ellie Whitehead or to Cat & Rabbit to see Kim/Simon.

It’s definitely not the ovarian cysts. And it will wait until Monday.
Holly has also had the same. She was passing frank blood. She has bladder sludge/crystals which are causing her to bleed as she passes them. She’s on metacam & potassium citrate and the crystals/sludge in her bladder have reduced well and are passing without causing her more bleeding. I am sure Sierra will also be fine until Monday when you can get her to a vet.

I’m sorry she’s given you such a fright. Hopefully she can be seen and sorted tomorrow.

These things always happen on weekends - or for me, my boys seem to give me a fright when our vet is on study leave! Hopefully you can get her seen tomorrow. Diego, one of my boys, also has IC so I know how stressful it is 😩 thinking of you - let us know how you get on tomorrow!

Managed to get an appointment with Ellie Whitehead for tomorrow, at 3:45pm.

Sierra is doing better today. She is still bleeding but not as much as when I posted this. She is eating as normal and I didn't have to give her a top up CC last night. She is eating as well this morning and went down from their hutch when hubby woke up for their early morning treats. We upped her Loxicom dosage to 0.7ml from 0.5ml and seems to managed her pain.

So sorry to hear Sierra has been having some problems.
That’s great to hear she’s doing well today. Hope all goes well at the appointment tomorrow 🤞🏻

Hope Sierra gets on OK tomorrow at the vets  🤞🏻

if it's any consolation my Ellie had an ovarian cyst, she kept getting UTI's & bleeding badly from her genitals too :( often after pooping as well as weeing. Generally none of the usual textbook ovarian cyst issues though.

As Ellie was 6yrs old & my vet wasn't prepared to do a spay,(they weren't used to operating on gpigs at the time) so she had hormone (HCG) chorulon injections.
Ellie only had one bad bleed afterwards but went on happily for another 2 years  (had another set of injections at 7yrs to reduce the cyst again).

Fingers crossed Sierra's easily sorted & the vet can diagnose her problems. big hug  xx

Sorry to hear the gorgeous :luv: Rocky has crossed rainbow bridge :bye:
RIP handsome man . Xx

All the best for tomorrow! Glad that Sierra is better in herself. Bleeding can come from either the urinary or the reproductive tract and it can have different causes. Please keep an open mind.

We took Sierra today to see Ellie Whitehead. Hubby was the one who went in with her. Ellie has squeezed Sierra's bladder and there were some blood that came out. Sierra stopped bleeding yesterday though.

Anyway, Ellie said it's not the ovarian cysts that was causing the problem. It was her bladder. She has very thick bladder wall. She did an ultrasound to check what is happening in there. There are no lumps, no stones, no sludge. There is a bit of gritty stuff but not enough to cause any problems, just something normal according to her. So her problem is really the inflamed and very thick bladder wall. She checked in the microscope her pee again and there is still no signs of infection.

She prescribed 0.3ml 2x a day Gabapentin. She also upped the Loxicom (dog) to 1.4ml 2x a day (Sierra weighs 1.4kg and according to her it's 1ml/kg). And we are still giving her the Cystophan. I'm quite worried about the very high doses to be honest, but we'll have to see how Sierra would cope with it. She is still eating and acting normal, apart from straining when peeing and pooping, although it's not as bad today compared to over the weekend, before we took her to the vet. We haven't seen any blood since yesterday.

Hubby will have to call Ellie again on Friday/Saturday to see how Sierra is going on by that time.

I can’t comment on the meds but good news as no stones so that’s a big plus. Hope Sierra is feeling better very soon x

Glad that it isn't cysts or stones/sludge/kidney problems but I am very sorry that her bladder is so badly affected.

I hope that the new regime can help to get the inflammation down.

I hope that the increased dose will help to keep her pain free and keep the situation under control.

Update on Sierra..

We took her to see Ellie Whitehead at Derwent Valley Vets today. We told her Sierra had a good weekend and she maintained her weight of 1380g-1390g for the past 2 days. We also reduced the Loxicom dosage to 1ml twice a day on the weekend and she seemed to cope with that. She still has blood on her pee on/off though and she sometimes squeak when she pee, sometimes doesn't. So it's both up and down with her really.

Ellie said that her bladder is still very inflamed but she checked her pee in the microscope again and there is no sign of infection still. Giving her antibiotics without infection won't do her good. Also she said there's almost no gritty stuff in her pee now. She said there are two things we can do as intervention for Sierra. One is to have a bladder flush to get rid of whatever is inside of her bladder and see what's going to happen from that point (like a clean fresh start of bladder). Another is to have surgery and get some sample of her bladder wall and investigate what's causing her problem (although she doesn't think it's cancer coz no lumps and such in the bladder wall; the whole bladder wall is inflamed, not certain parts of it, hence she doesn't think it's cancer). Both procedures have risks of course. She said it is up to us to decide if we want to go ahead with which one we want to do.

Hubby and I decided to see for another week what Sierra's condition would be since she was having good days. Yeah we are feeding her CC to top up her food intake daily but she still eats by herself and would interact with Vegas and Bryce from time to time. She still go to their fresh food area when it's feeding time to eat. In the morning, when hubby wakes up, she is downstairs with Vegas eating hay, like what she was doing this morning when I woke up first. So we are to continue with medication of 1ml Loxicom 2x a day and 0.15ml Gabapentin 2x a day.

Hope it’s not too much of a tough decision @anyar.dris, fingers and toes crossed Sierra picks up this week and you won’t need to make one! Come on gorgeous girl! ❤️
Big hugs to you all x

I think I would do exactly what you are doing - a wait and see approach. Hope things continue to improve.

Poor Sierra, hope she starts to improve soon.

Our Mavis had an inflamed bladder and we finally found that we can control the problem with 0.2ml of Metacam (twice daily) and Cystease (1 capsule a day). This was a bit trial and error. We have tried reducing / stopping the Metacam but within two weeks she was squeeking when passing urine again.

Hope you find a treatment that keeps Sierra comfortable.
