My two year old piggie Midna has started bleeding from her bottom/genital area. Over the past few weeks we have noticed the occasional spot of blood on the bedding but never been able to pinpoint a source for it until yesterday and there has been a sudden increase in the amount of blood blotches on the bedding and when I inspect her area there is blood all around the fleshy parts. It is fresh, bright red blood, rather than dark old blood. She has just had a heat but that should have finished today at the absolute latest, she seems fine in herself and has been munching on grass and hay and veggies perfectly happily with the rest of the herd. The blood doesn't seem to be in her urine as I have seen her wee and there was no blood left behind after that. I have a bad(?) habit of reacting like every little sneeze of theirs is a medical emergency so I told myself not to panic yesterday and see how she got on today. I've never seen this before in a piggie and I'm beginning to fear that maybe I should be reacting like it is an emergency?

Please have seen her promptly by a piggy savvy vet tomorrow if it stays like that or by an emergency vet if the bleeding is getting.

Bleeding from the genitalia is not good news in sows, I am afraid. It usually means that there is something seriously wrong with an ovarian cyst. :(

My piggy had the same problem last year. We rushed her to the vet who did an X-ray and ultrasound where thankfully nothing nasty was confirmed but she was prescribed antibiotics and metacam incase it was a urine infection

Thank you for the quick response! Okay yes I will definitely take her in to the vets tomorrow (hopefully they can fit her in, I will say it is serious). The only problem is that we're currently staying with my parents in Manchester so it won't be her usual vet and it is a long journey to the closest specialist in this heat! Do you have any advice to keep her cool during the journeys? My cars air con is broken.

Thank you, hopefully it will be the same with us and not something too serious! We'll rush her into a vets tomorrow, hopefully we can get her in

Thank you all for the kind messages! We have just got back from the vets, we managed to get her seen by an exotics specialist as an emergency. The vet didn't seem too worried. She did all the usual eye, ear, heart/lungs, and teeth checks and felt all along her abdomen area. Couldn't feel any lumps or swellings or anything unusual and Midna didn't seem to be in any undue pain during the exam though she was understandably uncomfortable, there also didn't seem to be anything usual about the appearance of her genital area aside from the flecks of blood. We've been prescribed Metacam for any pain and Marbocyl for any infections which we're to give her for 7 days.

I admit I'm a little trepidatious, giving her the meds when we got home she got fresh blood all over my hands and jeans. I feel like the vet should have given her some scans while we were there and I'm very worried that there is something more serious going on. I'll keep a close eye on her over the next few hours/days. Hopefully the antibiotics will help but if she's still bleeding when I get back to York on Monday I'm taking her straight to her usual vet.

It’s so scary isn’t it seeing all the fresh blood
:(. Thankfully Ellen stopped bleeding a couple of days in to the antibiotics so hopefully it’ll be the same for you but like I say, she did have a scan and X-ray to rule out any nasties but it’s good that your vet isn’t concerned

Thanks for letting us know. I'm glad it's not something that's clearly nasty.

I had a piggie some years ago, before I was clued up on piggie illnesses, and she had a recurring problem. She had investigations, surgical and scans etc and they couldn't find anything. She didn't have a piggie-savy vet (I wasn't aware of these either then) but they brought in a specialist vet after a while who could neither diagnose the problem definitively nor prescribe an effective treatment.

She lived with the problem for many years until she died aged 8. It was an expensive experience......but she enjoyed life to a grand old age.

I could be something that reoccurs and you need to monitor, but is otherwise not serious. Keep us posted and I hope she's ok.

Our girl Fudge had been feeling (and looking!) very under the weather recently so popped her to the vets. No sign of discomfort when weeing and no sign of blood until the vet palpated her bladder which caused her some discomfort; and out came some fresh blood.
Small amounts of browny dishcharge semi regularly now and she’s on long term Metacam. The vet thinks it’s a bladder tumour however Baytril seems to be helping along with Cystease for cats! She’s got her appetite back and less blood/discharge now, seems much brighter and looks loads better.
I know your vet can’t feel anything like a tumour but don’t know if this might help you!
Also make sure she drinks plenty; this will help!
Good luck to you and your piggy :) x

Hi all
Thank you for all the well wishes! I'm very happy to report that Midna seems to be doing really well. We haven't seen any fresh blood since Sunday and so haven't needed to go visit her usual vet after all. She seems plenty relaxed and happy despite hating the antibiotics with a passion! Hopefully she will forgive me for forcing her to eat such horrible things (the grumpy diva) and whatever it was has been cured and we won't see any repeat performances, once was scary enough! I'll still obviously keep a close eye on her and that particular area for a good while.

Hello everyone. Bad news I'm afraid, the bleeding has started again today. I've been checking her bottom every other day and nothing until today when I was cleaning their hutch and found a patch of hay with drops of very fresh blood on it, checked her bottom and sure enough there was some more dried blood and a little bit of fresh blood just inside. I've already made an appointment with her usual vet and she is being seen by the specialist on Monday, she's still happy and eating and drinking so I'm not too panicked yet but I'll rush her in as an emergency if any of that changes over the weekend.

The strange thing is though, that the first time we noticed it was when she went into heat. Today she went into heat again, her first since the antibiotics, and this is when the bleeding seems to have started again. Do you think the two could be connected?

Hi! Please start your own thread for support. Sadly many posters never come back to us.

Hello everyone. Many apologies that this thread is now years old and no update. There was a lot up in the air, a lot of unknowns, and a lot of mixed messages from vets that I didn’t feel made for an update. And then I forgot.
Amazing news though! Although we don’t have a firm diagnosis of what it is, we finally got confirmation that whatever the problem is is in her bladder and that it isn’t malignant. She’s on longterm metacam twice a day and is doing amazingly well, with only the occasional drops of blood on the bedding. We had a scary time a few months ago when she passed a huge blood clot, but she’s had an ultrasound etc. since then and is absolutely fine. We’ve noticed that calcium seems to have an impact on whatever it is, so we’ve cut as much calcium from her diet as we can and the blood had steadily died down into almost nothing since the clot. The specialist vets are happy that she’s healthy as can be expected and just to keep an eye on her.
So all in all, not a very satisfying conclusion, but one I’ll happily take if she’s happy and well - which she is. She’s still in high spirits and full of sass, can’t believe she’s nearly five now!

Oh no, so she never had a diagnosis? My piggie is going through the same thing, on antibiotics again and again 💔💔 Is there nothing that can be done?
