does anyone here use a small amount of bleach in the water when cleaning out a hutch? i read somewhere that this is ok to do is it? thanks

My parents use to clean out the rabbit hutch with bleach and it never did any harm to the rabbit, however I learnt at college that bleech for cleaning animal enclosures is a big no no even if its just a drop because of the chemicals.

You'd be better off just using hot water if you have no animal disinfectants to use.

However, I am curious as to what people may use if they don't use an animal disinfectant. Sometimes if I've run out and can't get to the pet shop I use a little bit of fairy liquid with hot water and make sure the hutches are bone dry before I put any bedding in.

I had to use vinegar once in a hamsters cage as I had nothing else, just very diluted.

oh iv got animal disinfectant but thought bleach would be better once in a while. Now i know not to though! mallethead

Has anybody tried using lemon juice with the vinegar...I hear thats always good to use for cleaning.

I did use lemon juice with for a while but to be honest I didn't like the combined smell so gave it up :))

I don't think tea trea oil would be ideal as eucalyptus is commonly considered poisonous to guinea pigs to eat. I've also heard bad stuff about eucalyptus scented bedding.

I use warm water to clean my hideys (have no regular cage) and if there are bad pee stains I use undiluted vinegar and rinse well.

I can't see how using bleach to clean would harm the pigs if you rinsed it off well. I have something called "vircon" that I got to have just in case a pig gets sick and I really need to disinfect stuff. It's what the rescue used.
