Bladder stone

My 5 year old piggy peed quite a bit of blood the other day and she has been very lethargic and withdrawn. We took her to the vet today and he found a large bladder stone. She’s in a lot of pain and it is too large to pass on its own. I don’t know if we should try surgery ($2,000!) or put her down. We are trying a pain med but it hasn’t helped yet. She recently developed a cataract and has one quickly developing in the other eye - she will be nearly blind soon. I feel terrible, she’s had a wonderful life and I worry I gave her too much fresh grass and lettuce recently and with her age she couldn’t process it properly, causing this stone. . Do you have any advice?

I’m sorry to hear this.

Grass doesn’t cause stones so please don’t worry about that. Grass is their natural diet and is health for them.

It's such a shame you're not in California and couldn't ask Saski from LA Guinea Pig Rescue to remove her stone for you!

So sorry to hear about your piggie. I was I'm your exact position 11 months ago. My 5 year old piggie had a large stone which stopped her from peeing and she was in pain. We opted for the surgery with a Vet we trusted (similar price £2k) and she pulled through and as of December when she had an xray she was still stone free . Don't get me wrong the after care at home was intense and around the clock for a week or so, but I'm so glad we did the surgery. She too has the beginings of cataracts and has mild arthritis in one of her legs, but she still comes running out squeaking her head off at dinner time and telling her sister whose alphapig.

Only you know your piggie, but just thought I would share my experience.

I would do it all over again if I had to, but only with a vet I explicitly trust.
