Hi, I have two 5 year old boys that I rescued about 4 years ago now. Bandit and Flik.
These are not the first piggies I've had over my lifetime.
Last week Bandit barely ate any of his veggies, which is super unusual for my boys. They eat pretty much anything!
I was obviously really worried. But the next day, although quiet in himself ( he has never been the most active of pigs. Also prone to being a bit of a Diva 😆) he seemed back to eating his veggies again.
Friday night he was barely eating again. I'd tried cutting veggies into thin slithers incase it was his teeth. Though we checked them and all seemed fine.
Friday night noticed he was passing quite a bit of blood in his urine 😢.
Took him to the vet yesterday and they were really good, felt him all over, did some kind of scan out the back and gave him metacam all for £67. A 97mm stone was found in his bladder 😔. Vet said it isn't causing an obstruction right now, so wouldn't need surgery imminently. The surgery would be £500+. I feel horrendous as I'm disabled, on a low income and just cannot afford that .kind of money. We've never had a holiday my partner and I in 26 years together. So I'm not just wasting money elsewhere. I'd sell all I could to get the money for Bandit, if I had things that were worth anything.
So he is on metacam once a day. Making a slight difference, but only yesterday that he started it.
Am I being cruel to him? As that's something I'd never want to be.
He ate a few pieces of pepper, celery and cucumber cut into matchsticks last night. Not the amount he'd usually be munching down.
Any advice would be appreciated. I feel so bad right now 😪.

Also any tips on foods to avoid. They barely used to have pellets as I didn't feel they were needed. Now have a small amount every other day ( tablespoon each).
Kale, parsley, spinach , rocket, basil, Dill are fed very rarely as know they are high in calcium.
I've erred on giving them spring green. As felt sure in my research it said that was ok to feed daily. So I did. Now I read different. I'd feel awful if I've caused this 😔.
I get hay sent from natures own is it? The company in Devon. They have a mix of meadow hay and I also get bales of sweet green, and often a cheaper maybe home bargains hay as a base to all this really ( so underneath all the good stuff just to make it extra soft)

Sorry for the long message. I just feel so caught right now, as cannot afford the surgery, and yet do not want my boy suffering.
Thank you for reading xx

Sending you hugs. It's nothing you've done wrong, it's just very bad luck.
I will leave the health experts to answer your questions.

What a handsome chap he is ❤️
I'm afraid I have no advice just wanted to offer support.
Aww thank you so much ♥️. He has always been so cheeky. Proper little Diva. Sad to see he has lost his spark 😪.
Thank you for your kindness x

Oh thank you 🥰. I needed to hear that, and hugs always appreciated.
I spent 20 years rescuing rats. So though I've had piggies over the years, I'm not as comfortable in my knowledge as I was with the ratties.
I appreciate you guys x

I’m so sorry you’ve had this news. I’m not a health expert but I have had a young piggy with a bladder stone. I chose to operate and unfortunately he didn’t get over the anaesthetic and passed away a few days later.

Your boy will probably not (but not impossible) pass the stone himself as boys have a little nook where the stone can get stuck. How much pain meds is he on? Sending healing vibes to him and hugs to you.

Aww bless you, I feel your pain.

We have recently had to have a 1cm bladder stone removed from our 5 year old piggie.

I am unable to comment on the finance side of things, could you perhaps ask if a payment plan is an option with your vet?

I agree with the above that at that size (I'm assuming you meant 0.97mm?) and whilst there may not be an obstruction now, it will be very painful and dangerous for your piggie if an obstruction does occur (this happened to us).

Is it worth upping his metacam to twice a day?

Sending hugs x
