Hi,
Found blood in the guinea enclosure. Have taken her to the vet (already on baytril and metacam for uti, this happens every few months). They’ve have done an ultrasound and said she has bladder sludge and a stone, quoted £1300-1400 for the operation to remove it. Is this the general cost? She even said herself to phone around and see if I can get it cheaper x

Hello and welcome to the forum,

Sorry you're in this situation. I've been quoted around £500 in the past (Vets4Pets), and I've paid £3500 for another bladder stone removal with complications which resulted in overnight care (hence the extra cost).

It would be worth phoning around for different prices, but ultimately I would choose whichever vet is the most knowledgeable and experienced with the procedure.

Good luck with everything, and keep us updated.

I paid about £500 last year for a stone removal. My piggy didn’t recover properly from the anaesthetic so another £200 to help him. It didn’t work and he passed away unfortunately. I’d go with the vet that has done the most piggy surgeries. Good luck.

I’ve been to collect her and they’ve now quoted over £1500. The vet said she has called the head vet as the pricing is too high for guinea pig surgery and is going to get back to me. Am just calling round to try and get some extra quotes x

I’m sorry he passed away, that’s so sad 😞. Was he old? Am ringing around now to try and find a good one xx

Wow, that is high price for surgery 😳 Is your vet an exotic specialist, they often charge more.
Have you looked at the forums recommended vets list to see if there is another one close to you?

My poppy had 2 surgeries to remove a bladder stone. First one came to just under £800, the recent one was just under £1200 but was also a hernia repair and we sent the stone off for analysis this time.
I would always choose the vet who had the most experience. She recovered very well from her first surgery unfortunately we lost her a couple of weeks ago a week after her second operation. There were complications and she suffered a stroke. Make sure you find a vet who is confident in doing this surgery in a piggie. Best of luck❤️

No. He was only 2 and a half. 😢. I think he just had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic. Most piggies do well after surgery. Good luck.

No they’re not even specialist. I have and have contacted 3 out the 4, 2 are getting back to me and 1 said their books are shut until the new year 😞

I’m sorry to hear that. That’s one of the things that’s really worrying me, how she would cope with the anaesthetic. Thank you xx

It was a shock. I really thought he’d be ok. You just can’t tell how they will do. But you can’t leave a piggy with a stone so you have to try surgery.

I won’t do no, am just collecting the quotes in then will book her in. Ones quoted £700-800 which is already half the price of the current vet
