Scruffy, my three year old rescue boar, keeps on squeaking when he wees and his coats looking fluffed up. We took him to the vets who put him on baytril and and metacam for a urinary tract infection which made no difference so we took to a guinea pig specialist who x-rayed his bladder and said there was no stone, so she put him on Septrin and metacam, again for an infection. When he started getting worse we took him back, but she just dismissed it saying it was just habit. I knew something was wrong because he wasn't his usual happy self. So we took him to another guinea pig specialist who has said that he is ill back she doesn't know whats causing it. Hes now on a quarter of a rymadyl tablet once a day for 2 weeks and the a quarter if a tablet every other day. He was doing really well on the tablets but now he keeps doing this occasional painful sounding squeak and hes really unhappy.

If anyone has any ideas of what could be causing it I would really like to hear them.

oh no poor piggy hes been through all that trying everything out like hes a guinea pig :P (well i know he is but you know what i mean)
Hope this treatment works as it sounds like the others didnt but i dont no what it could be

I would have thought the baytril and or septrin would have cleared up a UTI, septrin being the better antibiotic. Has any of the vets explored cystitis? An xray showed no stones? Hopefully Karen or Mary will be on soon. I would advise giving him extra water via syringe (non needle type of course) to flush his bladder through and some people use unsweetened cranberry juice too.

hi,First and foremost I increase fluids when they get UTIs to keep the bladder flushed. I don't use cranberry because I have yet to find a sugar free one that does not contain sweetners (saccarin etc) which are worse!

I use 10mg x2 daily of Rimadyl. Sounds like he was inflammed and the Rimadyl helped this, perhaps carry on treating but this time with Septrin, they can sometimes take a while to clear. Perhaps another xray would reveal a stone or grit?

Ask your vet about using Septrin :)

I use filtered water because I live in a hard water area. I hardly ever feed anything that contains alfalfa- Oxbow found this to be a major contributor to stones. Mine have Cavy Cuisine and occasionaly Rabbit Royale which does contain alfalfa.

My boar was on Uriflow and 40ml of water (plus what he drank of his own accord) per day.

www.planetguinea.co.uk/MarblesAndHisBladderStones.pdf Marbles is still alive and kicking since his op and hasn't needed to visit the vet except when his friend was ill ::) However, this may not work for your guinea and increased fluids and a balanced diet are as important. Sometimes you need to try different things to get the one that suits your guinea and sometimes, unfortunately, there is nothing you can do.

Awww thank you for replying, hes got to go back to Jenny in a few weeks, until then I'll syringe him fluids as hes not the best drinker. When he sees the vet I'll ask if she can do another x-ray as the first was done by a different vet.
