Hi,

I am a little confused between running and static licemallethead

My white piggie has little specks of black bits in his fur like nit eggs, he has no fur loss though.

Would I need an ivomectin type treatment or a bath with lice n easy from GG?

I was also wondering if he has got these from the hay any advice gratefully received thanks!

Is he scratching himself? It doesn't matter if he has lice or mites they all respond to the same treatment, ivermectin. It comes in little plastic tubes and you just drip it onto the back of their neck. I hope this helps.

Sorry to put a spanner in the works but I was under the impression that static mites are not killed with ivermectin. I would suggest some GG lice and easy shampoo. Hopefully someone else will confirm this :)

Little speaks on the hair shaft do sound like static mites - we've had a piggy in this week with them. They also remind me of head lice, so much so that it makes my head itch even just thinking about them!:)) From what I can remember they aren't blood suckers so can generally be dealt with by shampooing - lice n easy would be ideal. Don't think ivomec is required for these.

Thanks, I must say he didn't respond to ivermectin when I had put it on him around 3 weeks ago, they seem to be still there, so tomorrow I will give him a lice n easy bath to see if they shift thanks:)

I dislike the term "static lice", as these parasites are neither static nor lice! Their proper name is Chirodiscoides caviae, and they are mites which live in the fur and feed on skin flakes. In my experience (and according to guinealynx) two treatments of ivermectin spot on at the correct dose 10-14 days apart is effective, although a bath in lice and easy shampoo does leave the fur lovely and shiny. Whatever you use, make sure to repeat it so the eggs do not hatch and reinfest the animal.

A research paper, for anyone in doubt
