Hello, i have come home today and cleaned the pigs and noticed a bite mark on one of my pigs faces. They are two males and have been together for nearly a year in a few months. Rolo, the one who has been bitten is 5 and we lost his brother so we brought scruff who is 1 next month. They get on fairly ok have the odd rumble but nothing you wouldnt expect off two boars. I dont know what to do, they seem fine now, getting on as usual and rolo is his usual self. i was shocked when i saw it as i wouldnt have expected it from them two. Should i be separating them or leave them to see if anything else happens? This is the first time anything like this has happened

Hi!

If they are still fine with each other, then it is likely more a misjudged accidental bite/back leg swipe than a full-on fight, especially if it is more of a shallow gash than a full-on deep double pin prick bite.

If necessary (if there is some noticeable grudge; otherwise I would let them be) conduct a short-term separation for a couple of days and then put them together in neutral territory. If the bond is working they'll go back together as if nothing has happened. The two day separation should be enough for any sudden hormone spike to die down; these can also still plague young adults.

It could just be a misplaced nip. I’d keep a watchful eye on them first, see what’s going on if they seem ok

Here is a photo, it doesnt look accidental? But ill keep an eye on them dont want to make any rash desicions, and they are acting normal now, thanks for your help

It looks a bit crusty? Is this the photo or is his skin scaly/crusty?

The two punctures to the left def look like top inscisor puncture wounds. Was the same when my gerbils had a fight. But it could have been a mistake or just a one off

Its not crusty in real life, just the bad quality photo, yeah there is a big chunk of fur gone i just assumed that was bitten off aswell? But i cant check now for fur in the cage as i have cleaned them out since... does/would a fungal infection come on that quickly tho? Because it wasnt there yesterday?

No, this is unfortunately like a full-on bite! :(

Please have it seen by a vet to make sure that there is no deep damage.

If you have concerns, see how your bitten boy reacts during a temporary separation and/or re-intro. That is the best way of getting his honest opinion as you can't ask him outright.

It is always a gutting experience. HUGS!
