lwcreations

We haven't had a pigs long and we are new to this type of animal. We are trying to get them used to us by handling them often. Tonight one of them was nibbling on my buttons on my cardigan and then decided to bite my thumb. Do they bite out of frighten normally or do some just bite for no reason?

I have listened to some sounds on a site that someone listed but it is quite hard to tell what sound means what.

Any help appreciated. I am thinking of making a pen to put them in that we can also sit in so that they can run around us - is this a good idea?

The pen sounds like a great idea!
What sort of bite was it? sometimes mine give my fingers a little nibble if they want to be put back in their cage, I take this to mean they need a wee as very rarely wee on me. If you had been chopping veg, he may have thought it was a carrot! They very rarely bite deliberately, my old boar who has now passed away used to nip a bit if you put your hands to near him without warning but he was very poor sighted.

Well it was just a nip but she drew blood. I had been chopping fruit so I suppose it could have been that. I think my eldest son (he is 13) frightens them as he can be a bit twitchy and makes sharp movements and he was in the room.

I also have a 5 year old son who choose the pigs and he handles them but I do worry that they will escape from him, hence my idea of the pen, I am not sure where to buy one though or how to construct one - will have to give this some thought.

Mine have the occasional nibble but its normally on my zip/buttons/ears!
Its normal. If they bite then put them back every time they do it because normally its because they need a wee! Hope this helps!

Thanks for the responses I did pop her back in the cage straight away but then made sure that I stroked her while she was in the cage so she knows I am not frightened of her.

i made a pen for mine using the cube storage system which can also be used for the C&C cages.

Its huge and we can sit in it too!

If your interested i got mine from B&Q. Its called - mesh cube storage system silver effect. It comes with 24 grids which you can self assemble using the connectors. I didnt bother using the connectors, i used cable ties to enable me to fold it up and pop it away for easy storage when not in use. Cost £22.98 + £2 for cable ties.

hope this helps

Hi J,
That sounds great how long ago did you get them? They come in handy for other things too LOL. I have just made storage for my 12 x 12 papers (I craft) out of some that my son no longer uses for toy storage and don't really want to have to use them ones, so I would love to be able to get some more at that price.
Off to see if they are on their website.

only got mine about 10 days ago, and yeah they are on the website, fingers crossed they've got them in for you x

Thanks J I have checked the site and they have them in stock in my local branch apparently, you are a life saver.

Great!

Well i got my info from the forum, so its a big thanks to everyone on here, whos info and advice is FAB!

yeah this site is really helpful especially to someone who knows nothing about gp's

In my experience piggies can bite, sometimes even drawing blood, particularly when young. They usually grow out of this. It is a pain when they go through this stage! mallethead

However, it can be when they smell veg or fruit on your hands, but can even happen when your hands are clean.

When they mature, it usually stops though. :)

PS. When they do bite, make sure that they know that it isn't nice. I tend to growl as their mother would do! :))

Definately! i thought i had done lots of research before i got my piggies but when i got them home i realised i didnt really have a clue what to do so onto the forum i came and it has been a huge help! all the guys on here are fantastic, even if * think a question is stupid have a search through and I'm sure you will find someone that has already asked it! I am still learning and still have questions sometimes so the forum is great!

hey i have a 8 month old female pig, and lives on her own, who wont stop biting me.

it started off nibbling jumpers and arms which i took to mean she wanted to go back to the cage. but over the past month or two shes started biting me when i stroke her in the cage, she'll be happy to be petted for a few seconds and willingly come towards me to be petted, but then turns quickly and bites me- quite hard.

when i try to pick her up she will bite me then too. i have tried all different ways - from differernt books, pig sites, etc but she just bits and runs away. i have taken to putting the cage on the floor and letting her jump in and out of her own freewill as she wont be picked up.

dont really know what else to do..
she gets lots of running about time everyday where she jumps and races up and down the room (she tneds to nibble things out of curiosity eg my slippers and uni work!) so i take it shes happy with that, shes got pleantly of hay, lots of chewy things, i mix in food with the hay so she has to find her own food and hopefully reduce boardum, fresh carrots, cucumber and some spinage everyday.

anyone have any advice on what i can do with this grumpy guinea pig or is she just going through a teenage phase? :))

thanks :)
