Hi all, my two boars are about 5 months old now; I've had them since they were about 8 weeks old at Xmas. They are very different in character; Squeak is cheeky, confident, and in your face....Pudding is quiet, cautious and timid.

When I first had the boys, I spent a lot of time with them and they came on in leaps and bounds......we quickly reached the point where they were happy to be stroked in the cage, would willingly take food from me and would literally climb all over me when they were having floor time.

But then, about a month ago, Pudding seemed to go backwards......he will now barely even let me touch him; I can only just about manage to touch his nose before he scarpers. He'll still take food from me, but it's very much a 'grab and run away' arrangement!

Neither of them has ever really been happy about being handled and they're a nightmare to catch (but that doesn't worry me, cos I know lots of piggies are). They quickly get wise to my tricks to catch them, like when I put in a pigloo or a tunnel to shepherd them into.

When I do finally manage to catch them, Pudding completely freezes up and barely moves a muscle til I put him down. He certainly doesn't seem to enjoy being held and stroked, no matter how often I do it and how nice I try to make the experience for him.

Squeak, however, is a different matter.....he wriggles like an eel, tries to run off at every opportunity, squeals like a banshee and repeatedly tries to bite any bit of exposed flesh he can reach with his teeth. I don't think he's scared (he's the bold one of the two), I think he's just peed off with being held and letting me know in no uncertain terms! :o

Squeak is a strange one, really.......he's normally happy to be stroked and stroked in the cage, and actually wheeks for attention and fuss.......the other day, while I was stroking him, he gave a massive yawn, snuggled down in the vetbed, legs akimbo and closed his eyes! But then, other times he massively overreacts to being stroked and you'd think my fingers were giving him electric shocks!

I've never been able to bath the boys due to this handling problem (not that they need it, they don't smell and they are both smooth coated). I also worry that, when the time comes to have their nails clipped, I won't be able to handle them well enough to do it.

So what would you experienced piggie owners do with Squeak, my little reprobate? Is this rebellion a common behaviour trait in young boars, or is he just a naughty little man! Could this biting be a symptom of an illness? I've checked his coat as closely as I can, and I can't see any symptoms of mites or anything other type of infestation.

And what about Pudding? Will I just have to accept he's not a 'people piggy'?

Sorry for the massive post....that seems to be my speciailty!

Tracey

Hehe, cheeky boys!
My 2 boys are about the same, I just cuddle them regardless of their protests.:p
My older boar (Squeek) loves his cuddles but will be grumpy every now and then, and also run away when I try to touch him.
Toffee on the other hand have always hated cuddles, and pees on me when I cuddle him. I keep a thick skin and cuddle him anyway, as he has to know I love him. I do it with a towel nowadays...;)

I think your boars are just being boars.

my two boys are about the same age as yours and are pretty much the same. Bert - I can usually fool him to coming to me with hay and carrots and and then just grab him but with Ernie, I need to take everything out of the cage so he has nothing to hide behind then it takes a good few minutes chasing him around the cage. When I have them on my knee they're usually okay but i'll get a nip from Ernie when he wants to go back. I usually out him back pretty fast or else i'm getting peed on!

I'm gonna try and bath mine in the next week or two. I was too scared to clip their nails so i took them to the vet to do it. The vet actually told me that when you put them down for a run about just put a wee bit of sandpaper down and that'll naturally file their nails down. Haven't tried that yet but it'll probably be the worst sound!

Hi squeeksmom and msjojo....so it seems that it's just a case of 'boys being boys' then! Hehe! I think I need to invest in a pair of bird handling gauntlets for when I handle Squeak! :))

Actually, when the boys finally get to spend some time out in their run, I had planned to have the run half on the grass and half on the slabbed path, so their nails get a bit of natural filing! I didn't think of the sandpaper trick.....might make their feet sore, though?

Thanks for the replies, Tracey

Tracy you have just described my 2 Girls to a tee , same age and got at the same time...so i think Girls can be like boars too..Also the dominant thing has not settled yet rolleyes

Hi Sonia, no, my two are still scrapping over who's the top piggy in the cage! They go in spates......they're bezzie mates for a few days, then they have a major falling-out, then we're back to being BFF!

Last night, Pudding had a tuft of Squeak's fur in his mouth, so teeth and piggie had obviously made some sort of contact, but (thankfully) no bite marks or blood could be seen.

hi my firts thought reading was actually they may have mites, these cant be seen with the human eye. but can be treated with invectermin (xeno 450) and if they dont have them it wont harm them but act as a preventitive i beleive. might be worth a go especially if he didnt mind cuddles as much before.

Just to make sure, have him checked by a vet for mites - painful itchy skin can make a piggy go off being touched.

Otherwise, Pudding is now confident and relaxed enough enough to show you his true feelings (that is actually a positive development in itself because it needs a certain amount of trust) - he just doesn't like to be handled. Some piggies simply don't. My previous neutered boar Llewelyn was another one of them.

Can you try to train him to go into a pick up box? Like a padded shoebox with one small end cut off. Place a treat in the back and let him get comfy with it first for a day or two before you start moving it. That takes away a lot of the stress.

On your lap, you can take the lid off. Chat to him, give him little treats, brush him "accidentally" at first - just a little touch. Stop as soon as he is showing signs of not liking something. Try to gently work out where he likes and where he absolutely does not like to be touched. Accept his reactions.

Take your time. What you are trying to do is based on trust and communication. Hopefully, you can work out a compromise. I could give Llewelyn a stroke down the back and a little chin tickle most of the time, but he would be fed up within a couple of minutes, 5 minutes max.

PS: When Llewelyn was seriously ill, I could sit on the floor and he would come up to me, climb on my leg to get another dose of critical care.

haha exactly the same here..best of buddies 1 day then arch rivals the next :{

I've had to buy 2 of everything..because it was handbags at dawn all the time..

I've just finished the pen from the cubes..so they are happy today rolleyes

BTW it says 24 grids on the box..but i got 26 :P Did you ?

Thanks for the replies; I've ordered some Ivermectin (Xeno 450) as a precaution (funnily enough, I was thinking recently that I should treat them some time soon anyway).

To Wiebke; yeah, I think Pud is just a bit introverted, bless him, but he's very sweet even if he doesn't interact like Squeak does.

I've always preferred to use a box/pigloo/tunnel to pick them up, but they soon get wise to that and, after a few times, they won't go in! I think the rot set in when they were both on antibiotics a couple of months ago......they really didn't appreciate being forced to take their medication twice a day, I think all the hard work I'd done with them until that point sort of went out of the window then.

They're funny little things......both of them are happy to clamber all over me while I'm cleaning out their cage and they're having floor time, and they are completely comfortable with me at every other time apart from when it comes to actual handling. We'll get there, i guess, it's quite early days yet really.

Llewelyn sounds like he was a lovely fella, bless him.

Hi Sonia, not counted my grids.......I'll have a look later to check! I'm going to use my grids to rig up a foldable run which I'll attach to the boys' new three-tier cage (when it comes!).

We're planning to be imaginative with cable ties and jubilee clips.......OH is a builder, so I'm sure we can come up with some sort of ingenious design!

Tracey

Hi Teejay,

Yes thats what i've done..i've made a permanent run around the 3 tier cage...they are loving it :)

They wait by the cage door for it to be opened bless them x)

Hee hee, my OH is a builder too and believe me, he will come up with a design for your piggies :x Our two sets of boars have 12ft each on two storey's and a third storey added for girlies - all in a tropical beach hut theme. It is truly stunning and my OH made it really special for them :(|)

Blimey, Guinea pig slave, that sounds amazing! Can you post some pics, pretty please? :))

Tracey

Having probs with my photobucket at the moment mallethead and need to take more pics now it is complete but will do asap. He added another level recently to rehome a little sow and have a six week old baby coming to us the weekend :(|) as a little friend to our special girl)
OH planning to build something as crazy for outdoors :x he is a diamond with the piggies and nothing is too much for them rolleyes...bless.

Sounds like you've got a good un there! Mine is great when he puts his mind to it, but doesn't seem to put his mind to it very often....hehe! ;)

I blame the C & C grids you can buy - we never planned to go to this extent as they had big cages for night and day time floor pens. I worried it was too cold on the floor for them and casually mentioned we could put the furniture into storage ?/ and build something along the wall :x OH saw it as a challenge and it went from there rolleyes It's been great fun finding bits n bobs to add to the theme and started to go a bit overboard but the piggies have a lovely set up :))
Will pop some pics on as soon as I get this flippin photobucket thing sorted mallethead
