So for the majority of this summer I have been getting bitten off and on by what I have to assume are mites. They even survived my house being fumigated somehow and the part that confuses me is that neither of my piglets seem to have an issue at all. I am a major clean freak about the my/my guinea pigs bedroom. I have posted pictures before but they have a multi level 8x4 c&c cage with an opening where they can then head over to another like 10x5 open area of fleece liners. Everything gets vacuumed everyday, including my carpet, and fleece liners that require it get washed. This summer I even buzzed their hair decently short to help with heat, Absynnians, and just general ease of grooming. They both have maintained great coats and just health in general. Meanwhile I'm getting little red bumps that itch super bad and I'm at a loss for how this is possible. My mattress is sealed and bed bugs are not even a possibility in my situation. They both passed their bi annual vet checkups with flying colors and I'm constantly trying to avoid scratching my skin off in different areas of my body. Has anybody else had bug bite issues that do not affect their piglets and I'm somehow missing? I've researched this off and on all summer and I just can not figure it out 😵‍💫

Not trying to give tmi but I wear sport material boxer briefs that fit pretty snug and I've gotten bitten on my butt twice now so I'm ruling out little mosquitoes that are frequent here in San Diego during the summer.

There arent any guinea pig ectoparasites really which bite people, hay mites are in the hay/long fur of guinea pigs, skin mites are under the guinea pigs skin and would cause awful bald sore patches in the pigs but not affect humans, running lice in guinea pigs are readily visible as moving insects in the fur and again would not survive long on a human.
So I suggest maybe if your piggies are not itchy or balding or crawling with things, and you have a rash yourself, its nothing to do with the piggies at all, unless you have an allergy to their hay or urine- in which case the rash would only be in your hands/wrists and would flare up only immediately after cleaning out and handling the piggies.
I think this is a question for a dermatologist, probably nothing to do with your pets!

:agr:
It's great that your piggies are fine, which means it is probably a human specific parasite.
I would visit a Dr or specialist (for yourself) for a proper diagnosis, which would allow you to treat the infestation in your home and be more comfortable.

A house fumigation will deal with certain pests, but not necessarily all.
It would be worth checking what you were fumigated for, but for example things like bed bugs can only be effectively treated by replacing the mattress - most other treatments simply don't destroy all life stages of the parasites.

When you are outside, do you sit in the grass? If so, it could be chiggers. Those little are terrible! My kids keep getting them as they are constantly rolling around or sitting in the grass. It is starting to get cold here so I haven't had to deal with them lately.

It's not bed bugs for sure as those are visible if you look for them. The thing that gets me is that no I spend very little amount of time in grass in general. As weird as that may sound. I'm a commercial electrician and when I come home from work my boots come off in the garage and my laundry room is separate from the bedroom. Shoes are also a no go in my room as well. Whatever it is, they are too small to be seen by eye. They don't seem to be affecting my guinea pigs at all and when I get bit they itch like hell and last for about a week.

We fumigated the house recently for termites and I think for mosquitos. Tbh I can't remember right now but it was termites and some other small pest. But regardless they returned or survived after all of us being gone for a whole week!

Thanks for the replies, just wanted to see if maybe there was something I was unaware of or missing that could be normal for my piglets but causing me problems. Although I'm still baffled whatever it is survives the amount of vacuuming and cleaning i do daily and weekly.
