This has been going on for ages and i think its time it was stopped. my guinea will not stop biting the bars. his friend is below him as they both live alone(hes not depressed so ok with that). now we have got my shools guinea pig for the holidays and he still wont stop biting the bars, he gets really fustrated and tries to takethe bottle off and everything.I'm not sure if I'm just seeing this but today i saw pink at the sdes of his mout and i think its from biting the bars, i heard some where you can use vaseline is this true?

I heard you can get a bitter apple spray that might stop them i have a pig that does it when waiting for veggie's, she bite's the bar's all the time I'm chopping them up, i'm worried she's going to break her teeth:(

Can you move him. IT's the smell of the other pigs that are sending him wild, are the other guinea pigs female?

Theirs very little you can do about cage biting. When Milo does it I open his cage, and if it's Patrick take him out for a cuddle. Fred will do it if he sees his neighbour.

well the others arent female and we cant separate because they are top and bottom of a hutch. it wont be the new piggy because he has been doing it since last summer when he was outside. i could look for the apple spray but in recent times ive not been able to find it. I'm still wondering if vaseline would work because i read on here its harmles but taste-fouling, would this work?x

you can get bitter spray at most pet shops which is commonly used for puppies when teething.

I thought I would add that I tried the vaseline idea.... it works! I just put a coating of vaseline over the bars which Frazzle bites and he sniffs them, thinks yuck and just stands there, he attempted to bite them once got a mouthful of vaseline and hasn't tried since.. the look on his face was priceless!

Has he got plenty of stuff to chew on in the cage? They sometimes seem to try and use the bars to grind down their teeth.

Squeak constantly bit the bars. I gave her loads of willow sticks which she ignored so in the end I got her a wooden hut, which she happily chews instead of the bars.

Though you'll never get them to stop completely, as they'll still go mad for food and start biting the bars. Mine are so bad just lately I only have to rattle a carrier bag or even just walk towards the kitchen door and they are up at the bars!

Charlie started doing this recently, we seen him doing it for the first time yesterday. He bites the bars like crazy, only the same place which is the door of the cage. He stops when he's given food but starts again not long after finishing it.

Haha oh no!
Frazzle has everything he can imagine to chew, he used to love chewing his wooden blocks and actually popcorned when I gave them to him but now he ignores them. I also give him toilet tubes, wicker toys etc but the bars are always the tastiest..

ok ill have another look out for it thanks xx

Pets at home sells a spray but Coconut seems to like it, it certainly doesn't stop him biting the bars when he wants my attention rolleyes http://www.petsathome.com/shop/chew-stoppa-spray-250ml-by-vapet-15804

I came across the bitter apple spray: http://www.vetuk.co.uk/veterinary-supplies-pet-wound-care-products-c-141_169/bitter-apple-236mls-spray-p-1131 I've used this e-shop before and not had problems :)

Thinking about getting it when I'm satisfied the post is back to a reasonable standard of reliability. Its always been a bit iffy here grrrr

Coconut is the only one who chews the bars as well... The girls stand up with their paws on the bars if I'm near the cage and chew my fingers, not the bars ;) I think Coconut is just a nosy little boy :p

God he's doing it all the blood time now. He has a Chewb, bought today, and a string thing with chunks of wood on it hanging from his cage. He bites them for a second then decides he'd rather bite his cage. Not sure why, he can't actually bite the bars, they're too thin.
