Hi everyone

My guinea pig Binky has been on gut stimulants cisapride transdermal paste for two weeks now as she has a gassy tummy and she had stopped pooing and eating I’ve been massaging her tummy and her poos went back to normal so we weaned her off it but two days later she was in pain and gassy again and not pooing. But she had been doing good poos and the other day while still on the cisapride she had a large tummy and wasn’t eating or poo enough so we went to another vet and got 0.5ml metaclopramide and 0.5ml loxicom both twice a day. Her poos a couple of days ago were really good now they are less and not as good a quality but taking her off the stimulants have backfired I’m stringing her food too and she doesn’t eat fresh food right now. I not sure if I’m doing things right

Hello. I’m sorry your piggy is poorly. Did the vet say how long to give the medicine for? Do you have a follow up appointment with the vet? And what is her weight like?

Thank you,
No our vet hasn’t. We have had two X-rays done and both show a ball of gas but she has never had a firm tummy just that lack of poo. We think she had a reaction to sulfratrim and one vet said it could take months to repair. She has practically maintained weight for this time apart from dropping before this due to other health issues (bladder sludge). We have been to two forum recommended vets and both have prrescrubed pro kinetics upon examination. She was doing more poos the other day but she seems to not be doing as many now i have weighed her this morning and she is 967g and yesterday she was 974g. The guinea pig vet in Matlock said she felt tender around her kidneys and that could be causing the tummy trouble.

We have an appointment on Tuesday. I asked for binkys details to be send to Matlock along with her X-rays so Ellie could look at them but I’m not sure they have done so yet I have rung up a few times and they said they’d get back to be but haven’t.

She’s been back and forth at the vets so much because when she’s off the gut stimulants she stops eating and pooing and goes gassy

Hi

Are you syringe feeding? There will no poo output if not enough is going in at the other end; keep in mind that the poo output it running behind the intake for 1-2 days so your piggy can lose a lot of weight quickly without you not being aware.
Also keep in mind that at least three quarters of what a guinea pig eats in a day is hay, which you cannot jusdge by eye but need to replace with your support feed. With a piggy not eating at all, you are aiming for 60 ml over the course of 24 hours.
If there is a marked deterioration, please try to get an emrgency slot somewhere.

I have been syringing her. Before 5ml every 4 hours she is eating on her own so my vet said to space it out a bit more and see whether she loses weight that’s how to tell she is supporting herself. She gets 10mls before bed so I get some sleep and there are poops in the morning she doesn’t seem to be doing as many today and yesterday. I have been giving her 0.05ml cisapride paste every 24 hours as that’s what been working but she seems to be going less but not losing weight

Please stop the spacing out and start feeding more. You measure the food intake by weighing daily and then adjust the level of feeding support accordingly. You cannot make a piggy eat more by withdrawing feeding support. Your kitchen scales are your best ally. Yo
5 ml every 4 hours is far too little for a piggy that is only eating very little by themselves.

Please take the time read our various Care guides in your thread. 15 years of forum experience with thousands of enquiries every year and up to 50 years of owner experience have gone into all the little practical tips and in our advice in these guides.
We can't repeat all the little how-to things in detail in every thread, seeing that we all do this for free in our own free time on top of a job, our own piggies and a private life. Our collective experience is in the guide links which have taken me days to write to make sure that they are complete, precise and easy to follow.

I have read all the care guides multiple times and I appreciate you taking the time to write to me. She hasn’t lost weight in a week and half with the feeding i was giving her and my vet who has may years Experience and is recommended on this forum as she is eating herself I don’t want her to get reliant on me giving her to much so to space out the feeds if she lost any weight I would obviously give her more.
