I have just had an awful feeling that the 8x2 C&C cage is not big enough for 6 piggies, even though the 2x2 loft is due from next week.

What would be the minimum cage size for 6 piggies, including one boar? The herd is not yet ready to go together, as Snowy is not neutered yet, and Cutie and Fudge are about the same size as your hand and not yet bonded to the girls.

Sigh

I think a lot depends on the piggies in question to be honest.
Some pigs just like (need) more 'personal space'.
I think it probably also depends on how much they use the loft (2 of mine are loft lovers, 2 not so much), and how you set it up.
I think I have a tendency to over crowd my cage a bit because I want to make sure everyone has a choice of beds, etc

I had 4 pigs in a 7 x 2 with a 1 x 1 loft and I thought it was fine, but had plans to extend to an 9 x 2 with 2 lofts.
Sadly my 4 then fell out, and since then I have realised that Ruby is more like a boar when it come to space requirements - even as a pair with the only guinea pig she has ever truly accepted, she needs at least a 5 x 2 to be ok.

So all you can do is set it up, go ahead with introductions and see how it all goes. The good news is that you can easily break the herd down into two groups and have 2 separate cages if it doesn't work out.

I don't have any experience with herds so can't offer any personal advice. But I have heard people mention that groups sometimes work better when the cage is 3 grids wide as they aren't next to each other as much.

I was offered that advice when I had two boars who weren't getting along. I couldn't try it though as the cage was raised off the floor and I wouldn't be able to reach the corners if it were 3 wide.

If I have the grids 3 wide I won't be able to reach the corners either, as the entire cage is on a table.

I cannot extend it either as it takes up one entire wall. A loft seemed the obvious choice

I think it should be okay, especially with the loft being added. Zoomies :) I love to see those

I'm bonding the babies to the herd on Saturday.

Oh aren't they wriggly! They are cute little bundles of energetic fluff! My OH can't handle them so I get all of the snuggles! They were his idea and he purchased them but they are adorable. I can't wait to see the five girls all together.

Thank goodness that I refuse to breed my lot. I couldn't give away the babies and then I would be in a big mess! I'm over nax

Babies are he wriggliest thing ever! Bundles of excited energy. Hope it goes well

I'm over max wanted number now but my anxiety disorder and stress levels are lower because of it. So I'm not complaining

I am over my max levels of hamsters. They helped me ever so much with my anxiety/stress levels. I am very greatful to all of them and love them very much. My bedroom is full of hamster cages now!

Aww tiny hammies!

I owned hamsters for 30 years and now I only have one left. I had up to 7 at one point...cages everywhere!

Those were the days BP (Before Piggies)
