Hi All, I picked up a 2nd hand house for my daughters pigs today. They are in a large indoor cage at the moment but this is slightly larger and when I seen it in a charity shop marked at £7.50 I couldnt walk out without it. Anyway not sure if I'm going to put them in it or not as they are very happy in the current cage however I want to clean it before even thinking of using it. What is the best way to do this? I was to kill any germs or bugs that maybe on it but of course don't want to use bleach or anything like that, so what's the best option.

I can use the cage as a holding place for when there current is having a deep clean, or heaven forbid they have to be separated for any reason. Although its hard having it sat empty along with the outdoor hutch sitting empty make me want to fill them up but better stick with the 2 we have lol
Thanks in advance

When i needed to give my pigs' "holiday hutch" a good clean after it had been left out in the garden for a while i used hot soapy water followed by spraying it all down with a pet safe disinfectant. I found that that worked well.

A vet-grade pet disinfectant like Tri-gene is probably the best way. I wouldn't trust anything secondhand that I didn't know the source of to anything weaker. If a previous piggie got sick in there it might be harbouring some really nasty bug. :( But if I didn't have that on hand, I'd probably bite the bullet and bleach it, followed by 2-3 hot soapy washes/rinses after. Users on here recommended I bleach my Ferplast after an ear infection, and it was fine.

Thanks to both of you, that is what I was thinking it could be harbouring all sorts of nastys, I threw out the water bottle, bowls and toys it came with but want the hutch germ free before I risk putting the girls in. I will see if I can get some pet safe disinfectant failing that I'll give it a good wash with bleach and then as you say clean, clean and clea. Again to make sure there is none left
Thanks very much
