I recently brought two male guinea pigs from pets at home (silly thing to do) one of them unfortunately had a stroke, was blind and had to be put to sleep. This puts me in a predicament. Do i now try and bond my other piggy with another boar, or do i wait until he is old enough to neuter ( he is 11weeks) and then bond him with one or more females? I'm not sure what is the best option. I'm leaning more towards the neutering and getting some girls from a rescue but i feel so bad for him being alone at the moment. He seems fairly content but I cant help feeling awful for him

Hi there

Many rescues provide a Boar Dating Serice, where a lone boy comes to visit and picks his own cagemate. If you give your location hopefully there will be a rescue with a BDS within travelling distance.

Here's my BDS thread - it covers lots of different dates so should give you an idea of what to expect.

If you go down the neutering route I strongly advise you to thoroughly research the vet, procedure and post op care involved.

Firstly I'm sorry to hear your lost one of you lads so young.I take it your lad is a youngster? I would be inclined to visit some rescues and see if he can be paired with an older boar, as he is young, he will be hormonal from now up until as long as 15 months and will trying to esablish himself with displays of dominance and therefore so will any other young boar. And older boar will have passed through this stage and the heirachy will already be established and your young boar will not be a threat. This is the best option, in my opinion.

Second is to wait until he get closer to a year old and try him with a very young boar, around 6 weeks old.

Lastly in my opinion is to look at neutering once old enough. After neutering it is best to wait 6-8 weeks to make sure there is no sperm left at all. And do research your vet, ie- how many times has he done this procedure before? if he's not confidant or a specialied exotic vet it's not worth the risk.

Obviously this is just my opinion based on my experiences and of course you're free to do what you see is fit but as I say, that's my experiences.
Good luck! :)
