Hi,

I need everyone's opinion on the best solution in this situation:)

At the moment I am housing my two boars together, patch is very ill at the moment and I am syringe feeding him as you may know, he just wants to be left alone and is just hiding all the time it is so sad seeing the other one (biscuit) sitting near him lonely:(

I have Millie my sow in another cage with her babies, two are sows and one is a boar and he needs to be taken away from mum this week as he is nearly 3 weeks old.

so my questions are..........

Would this be the best solution...

seperate patch in the spare cage to give him peace and quiet and also quarantine him,

House the baby (3 weeks old) with biscuit?

The only other solution is leave biscuit with patch and house baby on is own?

Thanksx

I would do this..

Leave mum and the baby sows together.

Take the baby boar and pair him up with Biscuit (just watch for fighting etc later on)

and take Patch and put him a his own, but put his cage next to his mates so he can still see everyone.

This is what i would do in your situation but others may have a different option for you

Thank you, this is what I really want to do but only if it is right, wasn't sure if the boar was too young to go in with an adult but the baby is strong, quick and fairly big for his age so he should be fine:))

I would do the same as Prophet said although I'm by no means experienced with guinea pigs at all. Try introducing them to each other a couple of times before putting them to live together and hopefully that will give you more confidence that they can get along

Patch would be better off on his own if he is feeling rough, he wouldn't want other piglets pestering him.

With my dental pig Hector - even though I am syringe feeding him, he is still eating some bits of softened gerty and is very much still a happy piglet so I still keep him with his brother :)

Thank you everyone, I feel better now for going on my instincts to seperate.

I will put patch in the spare cage, and biscuit in with the baby boar I'm sure he will make a good piggie step daddy:))

I am so worried about patch, he is still so weak and already I have spent money on a vet who has not got to the root of the problem:( yes his teet are fixed by a wonderful lady but he isn't right and now I have lost faith in the vets no one could find a cause:(

Has he seen the rodentologist then?
If so, has he been eating since his teeth were done?

How much are you syringe feeding him a day atm?

Yes patch has been to the rodentologist and she trimmed his front teeth, nothing wrong with the back ones the vet knew nothing.

I asked her about the syringe feeding and she said water he pellets down and give him as much as he will she said you an't over feed guinea pigs as thier digestive system is designed to constantly eat.

I am feeding him every 2-3 hours with food and water he is not interested in eating:(

Strange that there was nothing wrong with his back teeth - lucky i suppose though. Maybe try him on a course of Daktarin Oral gel for 3 weeks incase he has a mouth fungal infection or something? 0.5ml 3x a day for one week, then 0.5ml 2x a day for one week and then 0.5ml once a day for one week.

Also keep trying him with different foods. Maybe put him on some pain relief such as Childs Nurofen as well incase there is any pain in the mouth - 0.2ml twice a day for about 3 days and if no change then stop giving it.

(This is what I did with Hector the first time around as advised by Laura) but you could always give Laura a text at the Guinea Pig Helpline
