I am new to guinea pigs and I want to do the best I can by my girls. I have looked on Amazon and cannot decide between the guineapiglopedia or the proper care of guinea pigs by Peter Gurney

Opinions gratefully received :)

Hi Kaz,

I have all of Peter Gurney's book and they are all very helpful. Peter really knew his stuff. Vedra at the CCT has also brought a new book out for diagnosing illness in piggies. I have just ordered the copy so not sure what it will be like yet.

I have a few peter gurney books and I find them very useful I have others but they arent as good, wouldnt mind a copy of the guineapiglopidia tho looks good O0

After careful consideration and the fact that I have already spent £200.00 on a outside hutch £50.00 on an indoor cage for the winter months and £80.00 on vetbed....I have just ordered both! husband should be reading this LOL!

Kaz
Where did you get your vet bed from, if you don't mind me asking.
I need to get some and don't know where is best.
Thanks
Anne.

I bought mine from ebay for about £12 I think? I did a lot of reaseach before I bought it and it was the cheapest :)

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread Kaz
Thanks Lavenderjade I will take a look later today
Anne.

Vedra's book is excellent, have bought myself a copy and given one to my vet too.

However, I'm not sure it would be ideal as a first book if you are new to guinea pigs as it does focus on all those horrible things that can go wrong and I feel a little bit of experience in piggie keeping first would make the book more relative to you. Also it's quite expensive.

I do like the Peter Gurney books of course but I never feel that the hutch sizes recommended in any books I have bought is ever satisfactory. They never show pictures either of what I would call a substantial hutch for either indoors or out.

In addition, very few discourage breeding of pet guinea pigs.

Having said all that I would just get as many books as you can over the first year or so ............ you can learn something new from all of them.

One book I particularly like is The really useful GP guide by Myra Mahoney :)

So glad I joined this forum, people are lovely...so helpful and friendly.

Anne I got my Vetbed from P@H got two large sizes which I cut into half. I have bought it for years for my dog and it washes and washes and lasts forever. Have discovered that it is best to brush off worst of hay and all poo daily and then before it goes into the washing machine I give it a good hoover, should prevent washing machine clogging (hopefully)!

Be careful of cheap immitations, original Vetbed comes marked as such.

just thought id add, that ive got piggy potions by peter guerney, and guineapig-lopaedia, both have been v useful and a good read O0

I would be interested in learning a bit more about Vedra's book and where you can get a copy too. Anyone?

£29.50 which includes postage, you can see it on the British Association of Rodentologists web site
