I have 9 piggies that all live on fleece, however after 2 years I'm getting a bit sick of cleaning it constantly, fleece is super high maintenance, I thought it'd be easier and cleaner than bedding but I'm personally not finding that to be the case and I'm sure it's because of the amount of pigs I have. My piggies love the fleece though, it looks cute, it's comfortable, dust free and low cost, but it's just too much work for me these days, I'm struggling to keep up due to personal health issues. I want to either fully switch to bedding or use part bedding and part fleece, using bedding in the most soiled areas. Can anyone recommend a good and cheap bedding? For those that have lots of piggies, what bedding do you use?

What do you consider cheap? It depends on your preference. I have tried shavings, biocatelet, an alternative to that (can't remember the name) and aubiose. I absolutely loved the latter but couldn't use it as I reacted.

I think the best thing to do is to look at this thread then shop around to see what fits your budget.

I'm not sure as i'm only using fleece, but maybe you can have fleece some places in their cage if they really like the fleece?

You can buy huge bags of Aspen shavings for a decent price at almost any store. However, if you try this make sure none of your guinea pigs have any reactions toward it. I have used it for a while and find it really nice.

Thank you guys, I checked out the link and I bought 2 bags of aubioise, hopefully it will be good! I plan to put bedding in the high traffic areas and fleece in the sleeping areas :)

If you have a car it’s cheaper to buy bales in person - Equine shops will usually sell something suitable though they vary a lot so worth ringing round etc. I used to buy Aubiose locally and it was much cheaper than having it delivered.

With only small animals at the moment and no piggies etc a bale of Megaspread shavings lasts me aaaggeesss (even with huge cages and being very generous with substrate!) so I get it delivered but when I had piggies we did collect it.

I don’t mind Aubiose but it does get absolutely everywhere lol. It felt like it must be following me round the house as I found it all over lol.

With more piggies in a big C&C I moved to substrate instead of fleece as getting everything washed and dried was difficult - especially in winter.

I use aubiose for my two piggies - it isn't the cheapest but it's not the most expensive - and it is amazing bedding.

Try this thread. It might help

Hi,i have 20 piggies,i use aubiose from equine store,it is £11.00 a bale.its more expensive but lasts a week even in a cage with 4 piggies.it works out cheaper in the long run as it requires less work, and not twice aweek changes.i use Basic Bliss as well,£7.00 a bale plain rapeseed chopped beeding.i find this lasts aweek as long as you do not have piggies that are extremely wet ! :)

I have 2 big c&c cages, a 6x4 housing 5 sows and a 8x2 housing 3 sows but I am upgrading them this week, I'm crazy lol! The herd of 5 are getting a 10x4 and the herd of 3 are getting 6x3. My idea being that a bigger cage=less cleaning, my herd of 5 sows especially are extremely wet and dirty, they have chosen one area and only pee there, it's so annoying and means I have to take out an entire fleece liner when it's just a small spot that is dirty, hence why I thought bedding might be better for my piggies personally, my herd of 3 are much cleaner and only pee in their hay pile, so I was going to use bedding in the hay areas too. I got x2 20kg bags of aubioise, I hope that will last a month, if so then I think I can afford this and it'll be much cleaner for the pigs and easier for me to manage...

Thank you for this, I ordered my bags online, £20 for 20kg so £11 sounds awesome! I have a couple of local equine stores so I'll phone and see if they have it cheaper

If you’re lucky enough to have a pee corner could you not just have a higher number of smaller fleece pee pads in that area that you change daily? That’s what I would try

that looks fantastic lucky piggies,i love Aubiose.have you an correx insert to stop it tracking onto the fleece ?
I don't but that's a great idea! It is bothering me too that it's going on the fleece haha, I have a lot of spare correx so I'll see what I can do :D

thats what I was going to suggest @VickiA - I layer up with the fleeces - big one on the bottom then smaller ones on top which I can switch out when they get wet or smelly...
