Hi everyone

I'm in need of a little advice - I have two very long haired boys (one is a Silkie and the other a Texel)
they are both bathed once a month as they both get a little bit smelly thanks to all that hair! They are also brushed daily to try and avoid mattes!

My texel in particular is awful for getting mattes - no matter how much i brush him or try and keep his hair trimmed. I've come to accept this is just going to be a fact of life with them and I don't mind having our nightly brushing time as it gives me chance to ensure they are comfy and happy with me!

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any brushes or methods that could get me rid the poor boys of mattes when they get one - I'm sure its not very comfortable for them when I'm trying to remove them and i'd like to know I'm doing all i can to make them more comfortable when I'm removing the mattes. I'd love to try and avoid cutting them free all the time as they have such lovely long hair but i know it needs to be done.

Cant advise re; brushes but the rescue where I am getting my two boars from (wheek and squeak in Southampton) advised me not to brush them but to trim out the mats, which you have been doing anyway.

Nightly brushing sounds really sweet.

Have nothing to offer, but will follow this thread with interest as my girls are long-haired but just babies at the mo so I have the joys of this to come :)

Mine are about 10 months now but I've been told they are exceptionally long haired (The Texel in particular) i have to trim his hair weekly to avoid him getting to matted he can't scuttle around properly xD

I use the pets at home small animal grooming set and also a soft face brush meant for horses, its brill.

Ah i was wondering if that would work! I used to own and retrain ex racehorses but due to uni commitments i just have my piggies now!
I've got all these brushes I've spent a good couple hours cleaning and sorting through but nothing to do with them!
Thanks for the tip!

Hello and welcome :)!
I have a long haired Peruvian pig , I use a soft bristle toothbrush then a small fine tooth comb. I also have given him the WORST haircut of his life due to mats being all over the place .
Welcome to the struggles!:D

Tell me about it ! Post some pics! Xo

Here they are! The caramel and greyish brown fellow is named Sir Phillip (The silkie) and the darker brown ball of fur who looks like he's been pulled through a bush is Mr Womble (the Texel)

They are gorgeous and I love their names. I often think of guineas as womble like. I have a merino (like a texel but with a crest I believe) and find it difficult brushing her. I trim her hair around her bottom area to try and prevent any dirt getting attached, although she is never keen on this.

@MrsMoo i understand completely ! I have a Peruvian which has hair down to the floor and beyond , he is NOT a cuddly chap so me getting him trimmed is a nightmare ! I've clipped him short now so there's no chance of matts or tangles or poo getting stuck in there !

luckily my two are quite happy to be cuddled and fussed with - i think thats probably something to do with the fact they are like my children! I have a snake as well but he isn't the friendliest now in his old age! quite the grumpy old man!
I often see Phillip and Womble grooming each other which i find a little funny as when i first got them they used to bicker like old women! i don't think their efforts particularly help me in the grooming department however.
But thank you very much @MrsMoo i'll let them know (not that i think they will pay much attention unless there is some nibbles involved xD they really are like spoilt little children xD
