Hiya all!

Found out my little boy Biscuit has a bladder stone about ½cm wide, vets done both ultrasound AND xray today to show me. Medivet in Hemel Hempstead quoted me £1,049 for removal of the stone.....Vet has 0 expierence with this procedure and told me its very risky and a 50/50 that he survives.

Didnt like that ONE BIT, so am now looking to go to Berkhamstead Village Vet, can anyone give me any guinea pig reviews / price ranges in their experience?

Just want to make sure my guinea is in safe hands! Thanks!

Can’t advise but wanted to offer support.
All the good and experienced vets I know are quite a distance from you.
Have you checked the Vet locator?

Vets4pets are very lovely if you live in the UK. I sadly don't know about this vet practice so can't give advice. But I would not go for them

Yeah i am in UK, Hemel and Berkhamsted are both in Hertfordshire, England
Vets4pets also sent us cards and flower seeds when our cat died and again when our dog Molly got a tumor last November and had too be put down. We're also lovely when David got a respiratory infection

Just had a look.
There’s a recommended vet in north Hertfordshire but the address doesn’t give the town.
You can check that with the post code.
Just checked the vet list, none of them are anywhere near me, i dont drive unfortunatly so i have to stay in my little circle, but yeah just after general reviews of the place i listed as ive not got many other options

On Vets4Pets, having very recently had the "final straw" telephone conversation with our local practice, all I can say is - they really vary!

We are de-registering from ours after two years of unprofessionalism, ineptitude, and a vet who is literally the only person in the world our dog has disliked right from the start... but we are planning to re-register at another branch just over the M1 who were excellent with our Nixie when she had her URTI back in January. They usually have good information on their branch websites though, so you should be able to find out more about your local one very easily. :)

Edit: Took this link out as I spotted you'd already done this! Sorry

I agree Vets4Pets vary. Having lost a piggie to the useless vets here with what should have been a simple diagnosis and treatment I wouldn't take a guinea pig to them again.

Rusty's bladder stone removal at our very experienced piggy savvy vets cost £2,000. They charge £35 a minute for surgery so I would say your quote is reasonable but I would only have it done by an experienced vet.
Rusty had a very good recovery and went on to live another 2 years.

I will share my ONLY expierence with V4Ps, i took my 4 guineas at the time to get sexxed because i thought female mounting at a young age was a bit strange, they told me it would be a free 2 minute check.

2 days later got a letter in the post "PAY US £40 FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT"

Phoned up and got laughed at, very unprofessional, never been since. That was back in 2017!

You can't really claim that Vets4Pets are lovely as it's a franchise. Each branch is very individual and whereas one might be excellent with small animals (guineas included) others may fall under the generic cat/dog vet with not much of a clue how to treat guineas. My vets is a Vets4Pets too and they are brilliant and extremely good with guineas but I have been referred to a specialist at a different Vets4Pets previously and I wasn't that impressed by the service there

Strange - my phone call today demanded payment for something they hadn't told me upfront would need payment. :hmm:

When I questioned why being harassed for payment was the first I'd heard of the charge, I got a fed up "that's just how we do things here" as a response. I get that she was talking about the charge itself but it was a little too on the nose for my whole experience of the place, so I promptly told her that they'd be losing our future business!

I feel like its a sneaky thing they do, ive heard someone elses expierence with the one in Hemel (the one i went to) saying they demanded £400 for things that was supposed to be covered by insurance

Crikey, I guess I should count myself lucky it was a relatively minor charge! I really hope it was a coincidence and human error, I hate to think that places would behave this way on purpose (wishful thinking, maybe). :(

Fingers crossed it was an error! I hope you got it sorted without too much fuss! 💖✨

I have a feeling I might have to make do with just leaving them an extremely spicy online review, but I will at least leave their "ears" ringing :))

All the best for your pig - let us know how you get on! 🤞
