Hi everyone hope it’s been a good Christmas.
We had a really sad day Monday when one of our two male guineapigs suddenly became ill and passed away. The vet wasn’t sure but thought it might have been a very bad urinary infection that had spread, a tumour or a neurological problem. We are now left with one male piggy. The usual living space is outside in a converted shed but since Monday we have kept our remaining piggy inside so that he is not alone. Does anyone have any suggestions on when might be acceptable to return him to his usual home? We only have a collapsible fabric pen indoors with a small wooden hut and some of his tunnels and chew toys in so it is not a permanent home and not much space compared to the shed. We have contacted a couple of rescue centres to ask advice on taking on a friend for him in the future. He currently seems happy as such as eating and drinking well and pottering about but we don’t want him to be lonely in the long term. Any suggestions gratefully received. I’m so sorry for your loss.

In terms of returning him back to his shed, is your shed heated? If so, then he could go back out once he has a new friend if the house and shed temperature and humidity are the same. Keep him indoors for the whole time he is single though.
if your shed isn’t heated, and he (and they once he gets a new friend) would likely be exposed to too large of a temperature fluctuation so they should remain indoors until the temperature warms up again in spring.

Thank you so much and thank you for your advice. The shed is insulated but not heated. They get a lot of hay and we provide heat pads within the sleeping areas when it is cold at night. When we adopted them in March they had been outdoor piggies and so we have kept them outdoors too.

That’s fine, mine live in a shed too, but once they come indoors they shouldnt be put back out again if the temperatures in the shed are considerably lower such as they are likely to be now.

I hope you have success in finding him a new friend.

Thank you, that’s what I had thought too. I think we maybe need to source a more suitable indoor enclosure in the meantime.

Yes let’s hope we can find a friend.

Thank you and happy new year!

c&c grids could perhaps be an option. As I say, mine live in my shed also but I have 14 c&c cable tied together (all except the two end grids) (to make a 5x2 cage which is the recommended size for two boars) which, when I need my boys to come indoors, I can just open up the grids, pop a connector on the end two grids. I have a plastic sheet and then use puppy pads and fleece for an instant cage and bedding. very cheap, very easy to set up and as the grids are tied and concertina up, it’s also easy to store when not in use
