Hi everyone .

My lovely lad Lando sadly passed away earlier this week after a continuous fight with his health. I'm absolutely gutted and heartbroken he's no longer around but feel comforted knowing he is no longer suffering.

He has left behind his brother Gus. From what we know from my mum (we're on holiday atm), he is doing absolutely fine & his behaviour hasn't changed since his brothers passing. My mum lay Lando down in the cage to allow Gus to sniff him & she said Gus just sniffed a few times then walked away.

As much as we're upset, we know in Gus' best interests he'd benefit from a new friend & companion. I wanted for advice on here as I'm totally lost as to how to go about things.

A bit of a profile on Gus (mean't in the most loving way possible... lol)

Age - 2 1/2, & un- neutered
- Very greedy,
- a pest (was constantly pestering Lando & wanting to start fights),
- he's not the brightest tool in the box, sometimes needs a little help to figure stuff out
- not the most cuddly or affectionate with humans
- a noisy git when food is mentioned or waved in front of him

I'm aware I'm not painting an ideal picture of him but that's our Gus! Any ideas of what sort of companion would be suitable?

Ah, boars. Complete nuisances with a penchant for the dramatic but a really, really cute face. There's no way that face belongs to a troublemaker, right?

Jokes aside, without getting him neutered you're looking at other boar companions (or spayed sows, but they're much harder to come across). Age only really comes into it where hormones are concerned, Gus is mostly out of the teenage stage but an older boar, a younger one, same age - what matters is character compatibility, not age. And that you're only going to know when you try bonding them. Wiebke has a great guide here that has anything you might wonder about explained.

Hahaha, I know right?! He's such a dumb boy but the cutest at that.

I feel as though Gus may take better to a baby - is he more likely to establish the heirachy being the older pig?

Hi

I am so sorry for your loss.

If you can get there, I would highly recommend that you contact Gertie's Lonely Guinea Pig Rescue in the Newcastle area (I think they could be in South Shields?). They have got lots of boars looking for a new home in rescue and offer boar dating - i.e. allowing Gus to decide who he gets on with. It always comes down to a personality match long before any age or gender considerations. The rescue can hopefully find some more patient and laid back personalities for Gus to meet.

Here is more info on how resue dating works: Rescues (Adoption and Dating), Shops, Breeders or Online? - What to consider when getting guinea pigs

Thanks. It just so happens that I've just dropped them a message - just before reading your comment. Hopefully they get back in touch, they're about a half hour drive from us so would be great if they could help.

They are very busy holding down day jobs but I am sure that they will come back to you. My Brathlys was from there. You are lucky to have the best rescue in the whole region so close by... especially one that specialises in boar dating.

Wishing you all the best!

It's not a given. I know @Freela ran into this recently when she introduced a new baby pig to her bereaved singleton and the baby went straight to Top Pig. Character matters much more than age.
Yes, it's very much down to personality and not age. We've several times had a baby pig come in and start running the show (including our current pair.) The older pig, Tomie, is just very much a cautious soul and baby Misa is a bossy little go-getter! LOL!

Update -

Gerties guinea pig rescue are unable to help. They haven’t got any boars that are willing to bond with other boars :(.

They’ve suggested either Tees Valley rescue or Pawz for thought.

We don’t want to use Pawz for thought as we got our boys from their originally & found the lady that fostered them to be quite condescending of us despite previous ownership of piggies.

All the best with trying Tees Valley.

As a fall-back option if nothing works out, you could always consider offering a nextdoor home to one of the unbondable Gerties' boars that is a similar age? It would help to free up a much needed rescue cage.

Thanks.

We don’t have the space to have a neighbouring piggy, the cage we have is a large c & c set up so can’t add another cage into the room as there’s no space!
If you have a large C&C, could it be split into two smaller singles cages? Just playing through all options.
