Hi all!

About a week ago, we lost our sweet Cory. He was confident, friendly, and fearless. His brother Trevor, however, is significantly more shy & for the past 2 days, has been hiding in the hay box at the back of the cage.

He genuinely seems terrified of the rest of the cage; I can lure him out a little bit with some critical care, but he walks very slowly/low to the ground and sprints back to the hay box once he’s done eating.

I’m not sure if one of our cats potentially scared him (he’s never been a fan of them, but did better when Cory was around), or if it’s that he’s grieving, or a bit of both. I would leave him alone and just put the resources he needs close to the hay box, but unfortunately, I have to take him out 2x/day to give him eyedrops for his conjunctivitis.

Anyone have tips on what to do until we can get him a friend? He finishes his meds on Friday, but I feel so sad seeing him this way :(

Thanks as always!

(Forgot to add: we’re planning on getting him a pal on Sunday)!

Sorry to hear this about Trevor. Piggies can grieve so probably that is part of the issue. Also as he his a nervous piggy and has lost his confident pal that in its self will make him fearful. I don't know if you had the opertunity to show Cory to him after he passed? That can sometimes help them adjust, so not knowing where Cory is may also be affecting him. It is great he will soon have a new companion, the world can be a scary place for a solitary piggy. In the meantime putting more tunnels and hidies and boxes and piles of hay in his enclosure should help him feel less exposed and happy to move around more. Also if you can cover or part cover it in some way can also help. (And obviously try to keep the cats away even if they are friendly).

Thank you for your kind response!

We did bring Cory home from the vet for Trevor to see, so he definitely knows that he’s passed and not just disappeared.

Also: the cats generally leave the cage alone (it’s up on a tall bed frame as a stand), but I’ve covered part of it. It seems to have helped, as today he’s doing a lot better; he’s slowly but surely exploring the cage again!

It sounds like Trevor is starting to come round fr9m either the scare or losing Cory X
