Hi. So my vet told us to get Bene bac plus for our Guinea pig. I was wondering if the gel or powder on is best for them? And if anyone knows where to get it In Bloomsburg

Hi and welcome

Which country are you in? We are UK based with members from literally all over the world. Knowing which part from the globe you hail will allow us to tailor any advice straight away as to what is relevant for you. You can change your location by clicking on your username on the top bar, go to account details and then down to location; for large countries like the USA, Canada or Australia, the state or province will also help (re. climate based aspects).

You can find bene bac in most pet shops or order it online from places like amazon or ebay, or from vet or pet supply sites when you google for it.

The powder is generally better for guinea pigs as you can syringe it with a little water, mix into any recovery formula if your piggy is not keen to have it given in or on a little piece of their favourite veg. They may not like the flavour of the gel.

What is your piggy being treated for?

Could you please add that to your personal details; we won't remember with your next post as this is a rather lively place. Country and state will do for your own protection.
Since only you have access to your personal information, we cannot change the entry for you.

Please take any piggy with a tummy upset (diarrhea or bloating) off any fresh veg until 24-48 hours after the poos have normalised again. Then start to reintroduce slowly one veg more with every meal; start with some fresh herbs if possible.

Keep in mind that at least three quarters of what guinea pigs eat in a day is hay, hay, and more unlimited hay (or carefully introduced fresh growing dog-pee free grass - too much at once at first can cause another bout of diarrhea or bloat.
One small bowl of preferably green veg and herbs and one tablespoon of pellets per piggy per day only replace the supplementary role that wild forage had in addition to the mainly grass/hay fibre based diet on which guinea pigs have evolved. Too much fresh feed, especially fruit and fattening root veg (carrot is like feeding a bar of chocolate) can encourage the wrong kind of digestive bacteria to overgrow (this is called dysbiosis), which causes diarrhea or bloating, or a combination thereof. Too many pellets can contribute to overweight and dental overgrowth as well as bladder stones; they are life-shortening if overfed because they mostly contain empty fillers and very little fibre when you look more closely at the ingredients on the label.
Please take the time to read our diet guide. It will not only help you avoid further tummy upsets but can also add 1-2 years to a healthy normal life span and take it from the lower end to the upper end of the average life span of 4-7 years - a good diet is the best present you can give your piggies! Hi .. I’m from NJ … You might be able to get Benebac from your vet. But if they can’t help, you can try Petco or PetSmart or you can try Tractor Supply Co (I see there are stores in W Hazleton, Milton, and Coal Township). I have ordered it online on Amazon. I have also ordered it from jefferspet.com. It is available as 1 gram gel tubes or as a 15 gram gel syringe. I have only used the 15g syringe. You can also buy it in powder form. But then you need to calculate and I have no desire to do that - gel is already mixed to correct consistency. Give Benebac 1 hr after administration of antibiotics. You may need to force feed if your piggy doesn’t lick it up. I have given it inside a lettuce wrap. Good luck! You might want to buy some Critical Care too. Diarrhea is NOT good. Hold back on daily fresh veggies for a bit (maybe just a piece of lettuce or green pepper). Check this forum regarding diarrhea or petplace.com (Antibiotic Associated Enterotoxemia in Guinea Pigs).

Powder will do - it lasts a bit longer than the gel and it is not all that difficult to measure out! the sooner you can start, the better.

Sorry to hear no one has it in stock! If you're a member of a Facebook Guinea pig group you can possibly find someone local who might have some on hand. If not, then you're going to have to get it online. I just thought of Chewy.com -- but for free shipping you'll need to order $49 worth of merchandise. Tractor Supply has an online site called tractorsupplyrx.com Not sure what their policy is for shipping. I've only ordered it through Amazon and JeffersPet.com

I tried the bene bac but quickly realized it didn't have directions for guinea pigs so I found one that's specifically made for small animals. My vet recommends it. It's pricy but it's working amazing.

Piggies under a pound get half a tablet. I crush mine up and put the dust in either water or in a pellet mash. Over a pound get 1 tablet

We just have her the 1st dose

If you have a healthy companion, you can always try making 'poo soup' (which is live healthy gut microbiome transfer and actually mimics natural behaviour in recovering guinea pigs). If done correctly, it can be even more effective than any artificial stuff because it contains tailor-made microbiome.

It is not as gross as it sounds but the trick is how to get the microbiome into the gut while still live so it can do some good. Here is how to do it: Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

You can always do it in addition to any other gut supplement, too.
