I read somewhere that bell pepper seeds were fatal for guinea pigs, but one of my neighbours feeds his guinea pigs the tops of bell peppers, covered with seeds. They are still alive and seemingly healthy. How is this possible?

I’d always heard they were a choking hazard until a couple of years ago when I was told that many well respected owners and rescues left the seeds of peppers in. So I guess they are safe and it’s just a matter of choice.

I think it's either one of those myths that get spread around without a source or miscommunication. I imagine the seeds of the hot peppers very well could be fatal to guinea pigs, given how much pain some can cause even a human! But the seeds in sweet peppers are fine, in my experience. They're actually my lots favourite part and will eat them first, I just chop them into chunks and don't remove anything :)

I mean, I suppose after feeding them for awhile it could become fatal. My piggies are picky and don’t like peppers. However, I do offer it every now and then without the seeds because I’m afraid of them choking. Good question for a vet! I’m going to ask next time I have a nail clipping appointment. :)

It is one of those urban legends that's been passed around. Guinea pigs have molars that grind up hay just fine. They can handle bell pepper seeds. They aren't *that* fragile. My boys absolutely love green, red and yellow bell peppers, but not orange, for some reason. That was disappointing when I tried to surprise them with a carved orange pepper "jack-o'-lantern" treat for my first Halloween with them.

Thanks so much, I’ll actually start feeding the seeds now instead of chucking them in the garbage :D

I always take mine out but thats just habit.... i just always thought they couldn't eat them..
