Hello, I have just joined this forum as I need some advice! I have two female piggies approximately 8 weeks old, from the same litter. They seem to be getting on ok, I haven't heard any teething chattering a few loud squeaks but nothing that has lasted more than a couple of seconds. Today though I have seen a bite on one of their faces that has broken the skin. Is this normal dominance behaviour or something more serious? I had two males before that had to be separated after a massive fight and the more dominate one became depressed and ill from it. They have a big enough indoor cage and get lots of attention as well as an outdoor run in the garden. Thanks

Hi! How long have you had your guinea pigs? Ringworm can often start as a scratch wound, as you can see in this guide here. It is sadly not at all uncommon in new shop-bought guinea pigs. Please use good hygiene when handling your guinea pigs. If it is fungal, you should see an increasing balding area spreading around around and then becoming crusty in the next days. Please see a vet in this case. Both guinea pigs will require fungal treatment. You can reclaim the vet cost from the shop by presenting the bill of sale together with the vet bill, provided you have had your guinea pigs up to two weeks, as in that case, exposure infection has happened at the shop.
Here is our ringworm guide: Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

If it has been a full-on intentional bite (which is extremely rare), their would be a noticeable tension and the girls would stay away from each other and usually teeth chatter at each other. Both parties are usually shocked and subdued in the aftermath, as that kind of bite tends to happen in defense and not in aggression. They can also happen in very skittish piggies that are spooked and making a dash for the same place.
Generally, it is more common for shallow scratches to happen, which can come from a misjudged nip or claw swipe. They are understood as such and do not lead to a break-up of the relationship.

Thanks for the advice. We got them on the 2nd September. I will keep an eye on it today and tomorrow and if it shows any signs of ringworm I will contact the vet. They don't seem to be keeping away from each other so hopefully they do like each other!

Whatever it is, it is either fungal or an accident. All the best!

The incubation period for ringworm is 10-14 days. Some p@h branches are known for having a persistent ringworm problem. As young guinea pigs have a not yet fully developed immune system when they have their lives upturned several times in short order, they are particularly prone to coming down with it.
Please take the time to read our ringworm guide. It is the one most transmittable issue between all mammals, so good hygiene is essential to get on top of it without catching it yourself and making sure that it cannot come back.

Thank you for adding your location. We have got a recommended UK vet locator on the top bar.
