Hi guys,

So... My friend's guinea pig - about 3-4 months old - had a seizure last night. She took him to the emergency vet who checked him out and said he couldn't see why it would've happened and that she's got to monitor him. He seemed to recover during the day and was behaving normally, but now she says he seems different. He started making strange movements and noises earlier in his little hidey-hole house where he normally hangs out too. He's still eating but he's not nearly as active and he looks completely wiped out and is spending most of his time sleeping in the house in the cage where the other guinea pig would always be, instead of going to his own spot in the hidey-hole. My friend's really worried about this change in Gizmo's behaviour and doesn't know what to do or why it's happening.
She also said the other guinea pig seemed like he was acting a hit differently too, like being protective of him, and normally would make more of an issue about Gizmo being in his spot, which also seems out of character.

Does anyone know anything that could help? Will Gizmo just bounce back after some rest, or is this a sign that there's more to come?

I’m sorry your friend’s piggy is unwell. Sometimes when they’re under the weather, the companion can ‘keep watch’ so to speak. It’s interesting how they know the other needs that company.

I would be inclined to have him checked again. The unusual sounds and movements and spending a lot of his time sleeping.

It’s also an idea for her to start weighing him daily at the same time and keep an eye on his weight. If he’s not eating she has to step in with syringe feeds to top him up.

I hope they can figure out what’s going on soon and he starts on the road to recovery. Meanwhile, please do give the link to her to read.

Emergency and Crisis Care as well as Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Hi. If he has had a siezure due to some kind of t.i.a. his brain will need time to recover and "rewire". It may take him days or weeks to gradually get back to normal. In the meantime it is important to weigh him daily and syringe feed him if necessary. Sadly it is possible he may have an other episode but also he may make a full recovery, if your friend is worried I would urge her to speak to the vet again.

Thanks guys. She's already been weighing him daily anyway and since the seizure she's been monitoring his food and water intake, and she's planning on taking him to the vet in the morning. Just wanted to know whether it was something that needed quick attention or not.

In terms of the way the other piggy is acting, it’s quite normal - often a cagemate will become more attentive and protective. They know when their friends are unwell.

Do keep us posted on how Gizmo gets on.
