I don't have piggies anymore sadly, but my friend is showing interest in getting two pigs and have already found a rescue with some (I chatted to them a while back) :) I noticed in the background of the rescue pigs photos they had a nice soft looking bedding I thought was woodshavings. Turns out it's called BedMax, heat treated and dust extracted - safe for rats and pigs. Rescue owner buys it from a local equine shop. Never heard of it but sounds great. Wonder if anyone had a second opinion x

be interested to hear more about this too

Bedmax are large size shavings and not especially soft, i wouldn't use them for piggies but I think someone posted once about them being good to use for rats. They are mostly used for horses. I use high quality dust extracted shavings and cover with hay.

I trialled my piggies on Bedmax (I have my mice on it, and as said it's great for rats and other rodents), but I found it was less absorbent for them than the deep layer of Aubiose I'd been using previously. I clean out every 6-7 days with a 5-8cm layer of Aubiose, but was needing to so so every 4-5 days with a similar depth of Bedmax. Doesn't sound like a lot of difference but the cost and amount of waste soon adds up. However I have the storage for multiple bales of substrate for my multiple species and so could be more picky about what I used long term than many other people can.

I don't find them not-soft though. Other brands of horse shavings are softer, but Bedmax isn't coarse.

(also to note that Stockmax is exactly the same product as Bedmax, just differently marketed. There is also Littlemax which has a smaller piece size)
