Hi all. I am just new here (well a returning old member).

I just got two new older girls today, Rosy who is 2 and Emily who is 17months. They are currently in a pets and home cage with access to an indoor run. (however they havent ventured out the house as i expected). I would love to make a C&C cage but i struggled to find all the bits for it last time round.

I was wondering what is the best bedding to use? Last time round i used Megazorb for my 6 piggies but i cant find supplier anywhere near me. They are currently using sawdust and i know its not practicle.

They are indoor piggies and obviously for this reason i would want to reduce the smell as much as possible from them. So for this reason what would everyone suggest i use? It wasnt that long ago out piggies all died but i feel so out of touch with it all

thanks
x

well i used to use sawdust, but my flat was forever filled with bits everywhere! i just bought cage liners from cosy cavies. she makes them to measure and i will never go back to anything else now, they're machine washable so you don't have to keep buying them, and you can choose any pattern, i've had them in about 4 days now, and they haven't needed washing yet, just need a quick sweep to get the poo up once a day http://www.cosycavies.co.uk/ she also made me the tunnel ramp, which the piggies love :) x

here's a pic of the new cage layout

Thank you for the link, your cage is looking fab. I have an excellent space under my stairs am hoping to make a home made cage for them so that would be ideal for it. Cheaper in the long run to x

yeah, that's one of the reasons i got the cage liners made, sawdust is getting ridiculously expensive, and i used so much of it with the 2 teired cage and the outdoor run hutch and i foster guinea pigs aswell for a small animal rescue called camp nibble http://www.campnibble.com/ so that's another cage. so i was getting through tonnes of the stuff! haha! now i don't have to worry again, and they really don't smell at all. i love the other things they make too, next payday they are going to be treated to a snuggaloo and a hammock :) x

i use hay in my piggies bed but to stop the smell i use these cage fresh granules you put them down under the wood shavings and hay this is on the back of the tub it says "as soon as they get wet ( for instance if a hamster, guinea pig urinates on them) the granules become activated. urine is instantly neutralised and then borken down to harmless by-products, which don't smell"

you can buy them from pet at home
