Apologies if there’s a thread on this already. I’m trying to work out what bedding is best for my boys when in the wooden cage
I’m looking for something that’s preferably not fleece (because of the cleaning, and shape of the cage) and is absorbent, and hopefully realatibely lightweight
Currently I use litter (like cat litter) but I’m not sure if it’s really the best choice
Please share photos of your bedding, with the name and your opinions, thanks!

We like Kaytee clean and cozy but its very expensive, so we just have a small cage area with that and mostly fleece. There was a thread recently about someone using some shredded cardboard from ecobale? That looked quite good. Some people use wood shavings with no problems too. We switched from wood shavings mostly because it stuck to the fleece a lot. And there are always hemp based beddings, we tried one and it was nice and absorbant but got kicked all over the floor! So it probably depends on the height of your cage sides really, whether you want to sweep or vacuum up wood shavings and hemp that make a mess, or if you have higher sides or perspex rather than grids that would contain it well.
There is the kaytee and carefresh that are soft paper based, and ecobale or eggboxes or finacard which are more cardboard based, and fitch which I think is shredded paper too? Or wood shavings, or hemp.
Maybe buy a small bag of a few different types to try at first?

The cage will have Perspex, but a wooden bit at the bottom (15cm high, roughly) to stop things getting kicked out etc... especially as the Perspex is removable, so it won’t matter if they kick it
The cage height is huge, it’s two levels also, so that won’t be a problem!
Thanks, that was really helpful!

You might want to try hemp then, there's a good hemp bedding on zooplus with a very surreal picture on the bag featuring digitally generated photos of small furries wearing odd clothes surrounded by cannabis leaves!
Hugro Natur I think it was called, a dust free hemp bedding from either Germany or the Netherlands, cheap and absorbant but small bits liable to fly out from between the C&C grids during a piggy chase, otherwise we'd probably have kept using it :)

Soooo I think we’re going for... fleece!
The only one I wouldn’t have thought we’d get, but here we are!
It’ll be quite a few weeks before we get it (until the cage is getting built) but the boys will like it
This might change though

I use shredded egg tray for my piggies' 2 floor hutch and fleece to the attached run at the bottom. But last week, decided to change the eggtray bedding to fleece as one of my piggies, Cookie, keeps on eating the eggtray bedding and we are trying to ger her back to eating properly after being so sick for a very long time. So they are in wood shavings at the moment while waiting for the fleece bedding. Hopefully they turn up today coz the shavings are everywhere and it's annoying!
