Hi everyone

I have been reading through the forums to learn, and I might have got this totally wrong, so let me know if i have.

From what I can gather. Many people here have switched from using hay etc and have sleeping areas as follows:

Vetbed on the floor (with nothing underneath except lino), and fleece dens for the piggies to sleep in. The only hay being available to eat, and in a different part of the hutch. Rather than being stuffed into the sleeping area to bed down in. Is this correct?

If so, how will this fair during the colder months? Would I add hay to the sleeping area then? Or will the above be ok then too? If it is ok at all!

Also, for the fleece dens. Do I provide one per piggie? Or one or two larger ones for them to share if I had, say 3 piggies in the hutch?

Many thanks

David

are your pigs inside or outside?

if inside then just the fleece beds will be fine all year round.

if outside then I would imagine hay would be needed in addition to fleece beds to ensure they keep warm but I might be wrong as I don't keep mine outside.

obviously in all cases hay MUST be readily available for them to eat.

I'm sure others will be alone to answer this soon.

Regarding number of fleece "dens". there should ideally be one form of bed or hide per pig.

Hi

Many thanks. That's what I thought :)

The hutch will be in a closed garage. From what you are saying I will add hay to the sleeping areas during the colder months.

Yes, there will be year round hay to eat!

You will need something absorbant under and vetbed or fleece.

Newspapers, towels, both..... vetbed and fleece arent absorbant which is why the top layer stays dry but if the water has no where to wisk away to it will leave very wet patches.
