Hi

I've had my new boar piggies for nearly 4 months and they are getting on great. At the moment I have megazorb litter on the base of the cage with hay covering this to provide a warm and comfortable bedding.

It is however quite hard to spot clean as they toilet everywhere and I'm having to remove pretty much all of it every day. I've seen on here about fitch bedding which looks good and cost effective. If I do use fitch, should I just have hay in one half of the cage to reduce the amount wasted when cleaned? What do you do if you're using this bedding?

I've used both Fitch & Megazorb but found Megazorb to be the best until I went back to it after trying various types of bedding over last 4 months but they've changed it & it now smells horrible & only lasts half as long. After seeing another member mentioning that they used Auboise I got a bag & have just filled the base of their 2.5m x 1m run to about 15mm deep. This has used between a 1/6 & 1/5 of a bag. I've been told that you don't need to change it all every week so I'm happy with it so far. Like Megazorb I cover it with a thin layer of hay & the piggies seem to be OK with it so far. Unlike Megazorb there's no dust & because it's made from hemp it can be composted.

Hay isn’t absorbant so personally i don’t rate it as a bedding, however if you do choose to use it, then you will have to use something like newspaper underneath, but i just generally find it to be very smelly and made my piggies a bit damp.

Fitch is good, although i find that any damp patches from wee or water bottle drips, spread into very big damp patches quickly, so i’ve stopped using it, but you do need a lot of space to store it because it comes in such large packaged amounts. When i’ve used fitch for my piggies i’ve never bothered spot cleaning i’ve just cleaned it out once a week.

My favourite bedding is still fleece !
