Hey all,

We are setting up our hutch/cage and are after getting some advice about bedding

Various forums/write ups have advised against a hay bedding as the skinnies have no fur to protect their skin from scratches etc...

Any of you skinny owners like to shed some light?

Thanks in advance
Nick

agree, soft fleece/vetbed will be the best choice for skinny piggies i would have thought :)

Yeah you definitely need fleece or vet bed. Personally I use fleece, they poop so much I find it harder to sweep up on vetbed, but it would be ok if you have a good handheld vacuum. I also put a litter tray with shavings in where they eat in a corner and mine does a lot of his business in there which really helps. They eat and drink a lot more as they need to keep up their body temperature so therefore a lot more poo and wee...I have to change the fleece pads under their bed/hidey every 1-2 days and full fleece change every 5 days.
Also if you have them just on shavings it really dries out their skin so defo need something soft :) Soft hay would be ok but I wouldn't suggest it as not absorbant and wouldn't keep them as warm.
Also just checking you are housing them indoors as they wont survive outside, they need to be at around 18 degrees :)

I use the same bedding for our skinny as for the other piggies. Hay on top of puppy pads. But Millie has a fleece cozy for her bed which is nice against her skin, keeps her warm & she just pops her head out to eat hay. The hay doesn't seem to have harmed her in 5 weeks here. She harms herself more with scratching her back & I now manicure her back nails weekly with an emary nail file to smooth the points away. This works well & she is now getting a lovely smooth back :) x

Mine are on a mixture of fleece and Vetbed and have fleecy cozies too. They do have hay that they can sit in though.

Fleece floor with hanging cave hammocks and an upper level that is a hayloft.

Evening, thanks for the replies

Yes we are keeping them indoors. I'm not a huge fan of keeping any pets outdoors.

We have been out and purchased vetbed and I am now looking at puppy training pads/incontinence pads for under the vetbed.

Would this be a good idea?

Thanks

How often do you change the puppy pads? Are they washable or disposable that you use?

Thanks

In a 4ft by 2ft hutch with 2 guinea pigs. A complete clean out is done every 7 days. This can be less depending on the piggies but never more than 7 days :)
