hi all, we Have just purchased two New Guinea pigs for my two girls and are just settling them in. I found this wonderful forum which has already helped soooo much.
I have found the whole housing thing a bit over whelming but I like the idea of using fleece and washing this regularly. I have see a massive pack of 100 puppy pads for puppy toilet training. Could I use one of those on the base with the fleece on top, then use a litter tray in the corner with sawdust in, and the hay and sawdust in their bed area?
How would i encourage them to do their business in the litter tray?
Also, can you just wash any piggy stuff in with your normal washing but within a pillow case?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated as we are very new to this!

Hello, welcome to the forum!

What cage have you got?

We are a convert to fleece. When you get fleece wash it a few times to make sure it wicks away. NEVER wash fleece with softener also just powder and when you wash it wash it in a horse bag

We use towels under our fleece but you can use puppy pads I know many on the forum do this.Piggies will wee and poo everywhere, however they do it more where the hay is located so that is a good idea. You can't really litter train piggies at all. Just work out when they need cleaning, this depends on soze of cage and do little spot cleans (poo picks) at other times. Guinea Pig poo is really unoffensive, I am very blase about it now lol :)) Will often find it in the strangest of places....

Lovely to have you join the forum, I hope you enjoy being an active part of the community, Be lovely to see some photos of your piggies once they have settled

Thank you for your advice. We have just started with a 120 cage from pets at home and are using the sawdust and hay at the moment. Just going to let them settle a bit First but hoping the fleece may be a bit tidier!

Awww bless, aren't they gorgeous. What are their names?

hi and welcome! your piggies are so cute!
I have two piggies, too, and I am totally satisfied of the fleece. Practical and no cost... because the only time I paid was when I went to the shop for buying lovely fleeces.
You can use the puppy pads and you can also arrange different set ups as you prefer. I want to show you mine, but the fact that it works perfectly for me does not mean it is perfect even for you, of course
It is only an idea.
Consider that here we have plenty of leaflets from supermarkets. Tons of papers which go directly to the bins..
I am using those papers as an absorbent layer underneath the fleece:

under the papers there are some old towel but only for having a thicker floor, more comfortable for the piggies. The towels remain dry and clean and have been there for 5-6 months now (never washed; they are clean).

once a day, during my piggies' floor time I hang the fleece outside to get some cool air

and then after changing the few wet papers of the cage and after puting new ones, I reuse the same fleece which I wash maybe once a week (or more if I want to change the colour of the cage)

Under the fleece you can put whatever you want... the only important thing is that the fleece must filter the wet and remain dry.
If you have old newspapers you can use them as well. here in Rome we are buried by these useless leaflets and I am using them for a good purpose :))
