From what I've read a lot of people seem to use fleece. I do understand the benefits of it but for me it's too much maintance.

I've currently got woodsaving with carefresh and it's not turned out as good as I hoped. When the pigs jump/run around it's going everywhere, in the food, on the igloos, even out the cage (10in wall).

So it's time for plan B.

Was thinking of using bedding hay and cover that with Carefresh. I am hoping the hay with hold together better and the Carefresh with help keep the cage fresh. Anyone tried this?

This was the hay I was thinking of getting:

I have read Pigs can get mites and the like from Hay that's my only concern about using it.

I changed from shavings & hay

I too used to use shavings & then tried hay - and found it too messy and expensive - I now use the vet bed - but cut it into 2 sections so easier to shake out than one large piece.:))

I think I will create a couple of test areas and see how it works. One area Hay/Carefresh and another Carefresh/hay.

I don't think hay is absorbent enough. The bottom of the cage would be wet. What if you continue using shavings but cover the whole cage with a layer of hay?

Some people also said they use wood pellets on the bottom and cover with carefresh on top and pack it down so it doesn't get kicked up as much.

Hay stink's when it's wet, i use cage liner's which i find easier than fleece and towels

My plan was to use woodshavings at the bottom covered by Hay and Carefresh at the bottom covered by hay in the areas they sleep/tend to use as a loo.

Hay does smell when it's wet so that has given me food for thought.?/

Would love to just use all Carefesh but it'll end up costing too much.

Soiled hay has to be removed at least once or twice a day. Other wise it makes the whole cage stink.

What don't you like about fleece?
