My guinea pig, James (I know, unusual name - my sister is only young :P), recently lost his bunny friend, Smokey. We never saw this problem before Smokey had to leave but now James is having some bedding issues. In the main covered part of the hutch, he is moving/eating the bedding and ripping the newspaper underneath to leave the bare hutch wood, and then going to the toilet on there! It is extremely annoying because it makes the hutch very hard to clean but I don't know how to stop him doing it. What can I do?
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Ok well guinea pigs need other guinea pigs as friends and rabbits are NOT suitable friends as one kick can kill a guinea pig if aimed correctly! I would suggest you get him another guinea pig friend from a rescue.

What sort of bedding do you use? Some guinea pigs eat newspaper and this in itself is not a problem for them. You could use a lining of lino on top of the wood to make it easier to clean

This is a great idea. And ditto getting another guinea pig they really don't like living on their own and do much better in pairs.

It used to be that rabbits and guineas lived together alot but it's not the norm any more because of the kicking and humping issues. Even pets at home have seperated them.

I know about the rabbit and guinea pig thing - I will be looking for a guinea pig friend for him asap - but the rabbit and the guinea pig were fine together in this instance.

I will try the lino idea though - thank you! :)

It's a longshot, but here goes:

Try putting a cardboard box filled with newspaper in his hutch (you may want to try either leaving it intact or shredding it). If you're lucky, he'll go in the cardboard box, rather than the rest of the hutch.
