On Monday I noticed Beans had a bit of a scab on her lip, only on 1 side. I thought I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes because it didn't seem to be bothering her, so I just kept it clean with warm water and used a cream from gorgeous guineas.

Well today it looks worse, bigger and I'm pretty sure it's on the other side of her mouth now. Basically it looks like 2 coldsores (I'm sure guinea pigs can't get them but that's how it looks).

I'm thinking I should get her checked at the vets now as it's been 3 days and no better.

Any ideas? This was from Tuesday, today it's more red and prominent.. she's not really had much fruit or anything acidic I don't think.

It could be the beginning of cheilitis (lip infection). Your vet may decide whether a a short cause of antibiotics or fungal is going to do the trick, or whether he'd like to try either. It is caused by bugs getting into tiny cracks in the lips. Please stay off any fruit and tomatoes.

Thank you. I think my vet is off just now so it'll have to be a vet that I'm not too sure how knowledgeable they are with pigs. How will they know if it requires AB or a fungal, or whether to leave it and see.. Is it contagious, I'm worried about Maple getting it.

It is not contagious and it is NOT an emergency! ;)

Also I did give tomato yesterday before I read about the infection thing so that's probably made it worse :(

Just stop giving fruit and tomato from now on for a while and please do not panic! Some guinea pigs are more sensitive to fruit acid (tomato is a fruit, actually) than others. It is not a major problem as you have caught it very early on. The problem is guessing what kind of bug may have got into the crack. ;)

My Morwenna started with cheilitis once; it went after a few days on itrafungol (which I had a small bit left of at home, so the vet and I decided to try it first), so we didn't need to go for an antibiotic. She's not had any more problems since for the last couple of years, but I have cut out fruit and tomatoes for several months and introduced them only slowly as an occasional treat.

She was checked at the vets today. Funnily enough after it getting worse the last few days, it looked a lot better this morning for the vets appointment

He had a good look and isn't concerned it's anything fungal etc. He said something about dermatitis? Basically Beans made me look like a hypochondriac :P

Not at all! Just a naturally concerned owner! X

Aww. Glad Beans is ok. Piggies always have a way of worrying us piggie slaves don't they. Lol.
